hi there,

does anyone do Winch mount plates for standard defender bumpers or is the only option a winch specific bumper?

cheers

Steve

I've only ever seen a winch specific, Normally the winches are 8 to 10" wide and they need a 'fairlead' in front of the drum so that the cable runs on and off correctly.
Winch bumpers also tie into the chassis behind the dumb-irons with additional bolts.
With just the 4 fasteners holding the std bumper on, you likely just rip them it off the first time you had a real pull.

cheers dude, i'll have a look at the proper bumpers

You could probably fab something up. Would need attaching to the chassis, standard bumper wouldn't be strong enough or have enough mounting points back to the chassis to be safe. Winch bumpers are significantly more heavy duty with additional mounting to the chassis.

The exact winch you are interested in may play a part too.

They do exist (LINK) and there is a piece of angle iron underneath that bolts to the front edge of the bumper but I am not sure if I would trust it to be heavy enough duty.

Interesting that you say that as my husky winch bumper doesn't, I have seen winch bumpers that do but mine just attaches with the four bumper bolts as standard. and I am fairly sure it is an original bumper not an aftermarket special.

This is my bumper for a husky and it mounts on the four normal bolts and then onto the chassis on each side

They bolt through the lashing eye holes in the front dumb irons
Think on RR they use where the panard bolts to the chassis(welded tube section)
I can see where they would mount but i just never had them on mine and on a quick ebay/facebook of winch bumpers most seem not to have them either. This is mine (although no the best photo) but it is sat on the floor on the standard bumper bolt tabs.

Have you seen the rear winch system from terafirma?
I did look at putting onto Hicap but I have extra brackets for the tub so can’t just bolt on .
They may do a good front one, and winch set up

See i'd be nervous of that, the bolts will likely shear around 1.1K/Kg and the mild steel will likely tear at around 2.5K/Kg, some of the things i've tried to 'tug' would have at least bent the dumb irons and/or bent the bolts, possibly, maybe.

The looks I used to get with the old recovery landrover with winch front and rear pulling rally cars on stage rallies was fun.
No need for calculations in them days just spare pants.

(Front bumper was 8” tube winch built in to it, rear was into the cross member)
