I have my winch isolator on the heelboard in my 110 . right next to the main winch battery

How do you see what you are doing with the bonnet up ?

I have a metal grill that hinges at the bottom edge, that comes up over the windscreen when winching. When not it lays down on top of the spare wheel (bonnet mounted) .

You are much safer winching from inside the vehicle JMHO

I agree about mat/blanket over the cable(wire) not so sure about the snatch block tho.

yup - but some of the new winches have a "remote" option - so yu can be in a "safe" area when controlling the winch

you still want an emergency stop though? The cheap little radio remotes are tat. A proper one will cost you around £150-£200.

ive got mine on the blank vent plate on the wing. ive got the isolator and the plug for the controller. both of these are high up and easy to get to. the cable can also come in through the cab window if needed and the isolator key is within easy reach if things go titties up

When I did my winch course (with a very experienced winch instructor, who'll remain nameless to protect the guilty) we were using a band new (like 1 week) Discovery 3 as an anchor as we respooled the cable neatly, when the solenoid jammed. By the time he reached the cut off it the gap was about 6 feet, so I'd say a cut off is essential.
Also do you want all that live power hanging off the front if you run into something. Far better to keep it isolate till you need it.
