OK, so I am rarely going to go off road in my Td5, I admit it. But, I like the idea of having a winch just in case I do, or for bad weather comfort/snow driving, helping others, whatever. My TD5 (2001) is bog standard. I was wondering whether the winch in a bag options advertised here and there are a good basic emergency option or a waste of money - anyone any experience of these?

I've been pondering one of these myself but also put off by 2500lbs, if I'm stuck enough that I can't get out then would a 1.1 ton winch get me out? Some how I doubt it, plus I don't think I've never been stuck enough to need a winch. The only use I can see I'd put it to is to move a vehicle on the flat to put it onto a trailer

Yes I reckon it would help you get out as long as you arent sunk up to axle casing, think of all the times you've been stuck in snow/ice and all you needed to get out was a little push or pull, obviously has its limits.
I sometimes think a totally std lightish vehicle with excellent tyres is the way to go.

If you used it with a pulley block you could double the pull. I think depending on the situation 2500lbs will be limited. I hear a lot of ATV guys use 2500lb winches.
I paid £125.00 for my 12000lb winch off fleabay. Although of course that has to be permanently mounted to the vehicle unless you fabricate something to make it removable.
If you can get one I think a tirfor is the way to go.

I generally find if you manage to get your 110 Defender stuck your going to need more than a 2000 LBS winch to get it out. It might be useful to tow someone else out in a car. But then all you need to do is hook them up to the Defender and pull them out.
I often use mine off road in the forest and even when there is a heavyish snow. Once stuck I use diff lock to reverse out. The only thing I can think of where it might be useful is to move a small tree blocking the track. I carry a chain saw and cut it up.
Save your money.
