Once my mot is done (and hopefully a first time pass) in a couple of weeks, will have some time to do fun stuff, so first things on my list is to make some HD front and rear bumpers, and gonna go for a winch up front.

Will be easier to make the bumper with an actual winch, so i am after some tips in what to look for, whether it be new or 2nd hand. I am guessing i will need a 12000lb one. Already got a second battery setup, so electrics are fine ready. Loads on ebay, but not sure what is too cheap, if you know what i mean. Not going for synth just yet, as don't have enough pennies yet.... but can add that at a later date.

Any pointers appreciated ;)

12000lb winch is the way to go. mr Noisy has replaced his front one recently with a high speed item which is very good. Cuts down on winding in or out with no load on the rope.

I would suggest synthetic rope if you can afford it. I still have cable and it gets heavy after a couple of recoveries and pulling it up hill in the mud is hard bloody work. Plus a rope will wind in tighter than cable when unloaded.

Making a bumper is easy and I would suggest making a winch tray secured to the chassis rather than a bumper item if you are after superior strength. All winches have the same mount dimensions and there are lots of information on the net.

Oh ****, forgot about that bumper design!

If you want a winch bumper design with holes marked out for a husky I have one as well as one for a smaller superwinch

I have a few designs going round in my head - wanted to go along the aerospace type design, but I cannot bend that sized tubing - well bend it nicely without collapsing it! So going to go for box section with smaller tubing (like my tree/rock sliders).

I will probably just build it around whatever winch I get and the Disco, so thanks for the offer - still might take it up depending on how I get on!

Cheers Ian,

I am looking hoping to have the mount on the steering guard mounts, as well as the bumper - as I don't trust my welding so the more mounting points the better.

Would love a synthetic rope, but out of my budget, although I saw a nice winch setup with a synth rope for £550.00ish on ebay...

But no knowledge if these are good or bad - and don't fancy wasting £500.00 odd notes on rubbish....so hence seeing what people in the 'know' are using and wouldn't use ;)
