We had a plan to go to Portugal next year and do a North-to-South offroad route we've heard about. We intended to wild camp but expert opinion suggests that this won't be possible as it's a. illegal throughout the country and b. especially so in National Parks, which have variable rules on all kinds of things anyway.

Does anyone have any experience of the above? While we love the wild camping ethos, we don't fancy having to be on our guard the whole time in case someone gets grumpy and/or we get arrested!

It is illegal here...but can be a bit of a grey area it depends on how the GNR want to act on that specific day plenty of motorhomes camp for months on scrap land in plain view or even in car-parks in towns...cyclists camp in council rest areas...you could ask local land owners for permission as there will be lots of private land owned by locals on your route...there's no such thing as trespass law here..

Not that i'm promoting anything that's against the law but spent about 3 weeks in Portugal hugging the coast pretty much all the way down to Lisbon.

Hi, can’t comment on anything in portugal but a couple of usfancy going there this year for the same north south run. Are you still planning to go?
Sorry to have missed your question...yes, we still plan to go but the Brexit nonsense is putting a bit of a spanner in the works at the moment. We have a new dog and want to take her with us, but the rules might change and/or make this difficult. We're researching the options, but if we go it'll probably be in Late June/Early July.

In Prtugal to camp anywhere you like outside camping parks is prohibited. Outside these designated places, there is a strict requirement of license you have to request and have approved by the local authorities. You should not risk it. Especially in summer, with the very serious problem of forest fires in the country, you can be sure to have patrols everywhere! There are plenty of camping parks all over the country, and they are very cheap for just setting up a tent. Plenty of info you can find on these camping sites.
