Wide vs Narrow Tyres

Hi all,

I have a set of alloys from a Discovery 1 which I plan to fit with new tyres to replace my current set of wheels and tyres.

What I want to know is for off-road, would people recommend narrower tyres or wider? Everyone seems to assume wider is better, but I am not entirely sure, especially when it comes to on-road noise.

The two sizes I am considering are 235/85R16 and 285/75R16, both of which give good ground clearance.

Personally, I am keen on the 235/85R16 size as you get much less rubbish sprayed over your truck with narrower tyres, and I think they suit Defenders better than wider tyres.

What are people's thoughts? (Will 285/75R16 fit on Discovery alloys?)
 
235, will fit no problem, 285 will fit but are a bit wide for standard disco alloys, and will require lock stop adjustment
 
I have just taken. Set of 35/12.50r15 of my 90 and put 235/86/16 on. As you said the font spray as much mid everywhere and I went off road at the weekend and had no bother,

I'll say it befor some one eles there hundreds of tyre threads on here your gona get told to search,
 
i think tread pattern is more important than wide or narrow, you dont see many challange trucks running less than 10.5 inch/280,s wide
 
in between the two you mention would prob give best results 255/85r16 not excessively wide and good and tall for under axle clearance JMHO
 
I have a set of 265/85 AT2's that give good off road clearance and were excellent in the snow... but I have gone back to the original 205's for road use, as I felt the wider AT2's tended to pull you off track when there's deeper surface water.

Keeping both sets of tyres has worked well for me... as Shifty said: no one tyre will do everything.

Check your offsets, as this will have an effect on the mud splatter... even a narrow tyre will splatter up the side if the offset is too extreme.
 
My skinny Deestone Extra Traction 7.50s are brilliant in mud, and are also good fun on wet roads - if you like ice skating!
 
Most Tyre companies recommend 8-9" wide wheels for 285 tyres, unless you're lucky, the discovery alloys will, like most, be 7" wide, 265 is as wide as I'd go with standard 7" discovery alloys
