I think it.is there to stop it openning too far and straining the hinges. Mine doesnt stay open either.

The defender ones have a spring in the channel that act to hold it open, pic below. I would suggest looking at that is similar to the front doors which is just a check strap to prevent opening too far.

You could try parking on a slope or get one of these , some 6mm stainless bar bent at each end and a couple of kitchen unit blocks, a springy washer thing on the inside

I don't think the series doors 'click-n-stay' but the defenders do.
Mine wasn't operating as it should so I bought a new strap and spring and installed it.
You need to do a bit of welding and hopefully the pics make sense ...
The following pic is where the strap fits to the rear tub. As you can see it was a bit of a mess.
I fitted a new plate to the back and bolted the strap through to make it all secure.
You can also get a gas-strut kit which hold the door open.
My friend has one on his Defender, the door opens (by itself) and you need to push it closed.

It works when the car is at any angle and was easy to fit.

It is there to stop the door swinging back and damging itself, or the lights, etc.
A low tech solution is to get someone to hold it open, or just prop a piece of wood against it while you lift items in or whatever.
Or if you want, you can make something yourself, as described above^^^^^.

My man holds the door open. Can’t remember his name but he’s jolly good. Been with us about thirty years I believe.

It should stop the door at 90 deg but a gust of wind will overcome that and get it stuck. Lie many I have a hook/rod arrangement on the outside.

Don't worry about it, so long as you remember to check the oil and water it will be OK.
