Why was there never an auto Defender / 90 / 110?

Seems strange to me, chatting with the Dakar owner about this.

Why was there never a factory auto option?

Auto was available elsewhere with the V8 and the last 3 LR designed Diesel engines.

But not so good for people not used to manuals, or people with leg issues, or a lot of Americans.

defender isn't rated for merkins, hence the 25yr classic car imports, so you can rule out that market. :)

if it's for the agricultural roots, then no point really unless they had an auto tractor and auto forklift

I like manual for pay & play and auto for laning but if I was restricted to auto due to licence or mobility issues I'd soon adapt to auto for everything..

agricultural fork lifts have had no clutch for decades

I think the option of an auto Freelander was so good they realised an auto tratter just couldn't compete. Hence limited models in the uk.
