Ok, so i can explain better ive drawn a diagram (see below) to Haynes manual standards.....lol.
Why when i go from 1st gear to 2nd gear (FIG 1) it crunches, yet if i go from 1st, slightly into neutral, then back down into 2nd (FIG 2)it goes in smooth?

Is it a time or rev thing, not something I have found on mu disco but onb trucks if you change gear to fast or at too higher revs there is a crunch or it wont go in?

Certainly not a rev thing, suppose it could be a time thing, im still getting used to driving it again after a while as mondeo man, whilst the other half drove the 4x4.
Im sure i didnt have this problem in my old disco, but then again it might not of been obvious.

Should have got an automatic!

I would of done, but the last time "she" drove one we had, she didnt know how to turn cruise control off and entered Manchester airport like an Iranian terrorist!!!
She's never liked them since.

I used to drive an old toyota that crunched from 1st into 2nd and it annoyed the $#%^& out of me. My old man taught me a way around it, pretty simple really. The synchros when they get worn dont allow the exact lining up from one gear to the next so you have to give it time to line up. If youre straight shifting in one motion from 1st to 2nd it crunches. If you make it two movements with the gentlest of pauses between taking it out of 1st and putting it into 2nd, the synchro has time to line up for the next gear. I taught my son to drive in that car and it only took him a few goes to get it right without the crunch.

It's a cross to bear with an older gearbox sometimes.

Double D Clutch, dip clutch take out of gear, let clutch up, dip clutch put in to next gear up or down, used to do it before syncomesh gears. Wi9th a bit of practice it can be done just as quick as a normal gear change. Otherwise tak the box out and change the brass syncro rings.
