heres a couple more. my engine bay ended up the same colour as the front bumper and it took me 2 1/2 hours with a pressure washer to clean it this morning and then another 1/2 hour to clean the drive. there was also a couple of hills on the course that a disco and a 90 took 2 attempts to get up but i got up them first time so i'm well impressed with the hippo's off road abillity.who needs a low box . traction control and hdc are just as good.![]()
Full marks, the wee fella looks like he is having a blast.
TBH I dont know you avoided water intake, with a minor adaption to the air intake duct (I dont mean snorkel) you would have showed a few tractor boys how its done.
Hi Northern Irelander
Could you please give us some more detail on the adaption on the air-intake?
Thanks
I say Hippo's don't like mud !, at least mine doesn't, or more specifically the alternator doesn't, it went belly up about 20 miles up the A1 from the show.
Another Freebie oner posting on freelanderclub.org did same thing as me & has alternator poblems, why did they put it down low, I guess in a Beemer as long as it will go through car washes that's OK.
You could seal them up I guess.
You could also just buy a defender!! And do the job properly!![]()
TBH the alternator is sitting pretty high, I mean it's as high you can realistically go on the engine block.
What exactly was wrong with the alt?
I bet it was caked with mud rather than the wet issue, probably overheated the coils and melted some of the wiring.
Racemettle Ltd - Home Page do re-wiring, can even make the output (AMPS) higher.
If you think its an issue then why don't you move it, call yourselves a Freelander club

Old school minis have twin cam k-series engines fitted, they go like stink, alt is moved in them, radiators are not in your usual places either.

Did the mud run Sat & Sun, it was much deeper on the Sunday, marshall said it was because not as many Landy's went through on the second day, hate to admit it but arrived home courtesy of AA relay, thank god it was dark !. Totally agree about Freebies traction, amazingly good, don't agree with HDC comments, had a couple of bad experiences with it & now leave it switched off. You aint listening, standard wading depth for depender is 50cm, plus you gotta stick that square plug into the gearbox![]()
Plug? Gearbox?
!
I don't agree that the alternator is as high up as it could be on TD4, you have to take off the sump guard to get at it & remove it from below, all other 4X4's i've owned have had the alternator right at top of engine at least level with the cylinder head. Has anyone moved the Alternator higher up, does anyone know of a kit ?.
The standard air induction isn't bad, just remove the swan neck intake and run some ducting to the highest point in the engine bay, near the jack and ECU pack.
Any aftermarket performance filters connect higher up in the bay, they usually come with ducting.
If you are worried about water ingress, just seal up the join with a bead of silicone, there is also a pilot hole in the base of the filter housing, just block it up.
TBH the water course above is about as high you ever want to venture into, why do you need a snorkel at roof level. Any deeper and your ECU, electronics will fry.
You could seal them up I guess.
Hi
Well I've got a 1999 L-series and the air intake is as high as the ECU etc.
So I can just block the pilot hole?
There is a pipe going into the side of the engine bay at the bottom from the air-intake.
Anybody know what that does or is that the pilot hole?
Thanks
