I've fitted a TK103B to my landy. So far it seems to work well, and hasn't drained my battery despite it sitting in the back garden.

I hooked it up to orange.gps-trace.com. It gives me a map, and I've set any location reports to go there as well as a text message.
I'm currently using giffgaff - same as I use for my mobile. It has free sms to other giffgaff (ie me), and data is cheap enough that it's only used a few pence of credit in the last few weeks (this will go up i guess once I start driving....)
The tracker itself cost me about £10 i think a few years ago

When I was in the job, I of course knew people from the special car crime team. This was back in the days before mobiles and personal GPS, so the choices were pretty much only Trakker or Datatrack. It was not uncommon for organised folks to know there were only a few places these could be fit, and have them out rather quickly. The proliferation of systems now, especially home installed ones makes finding and removing them a little more of a problem. My current little box glued to the alpine window looks like its from an old glass mount car phone antenna from the inside, and with extra dark tint is invisible from the outside.

As with GSE, I used to use giffgaff, but the area I live in now is appalling for o2 coverage who supply giffgaff, hence the swap to asda running on EE.

Presumably, when you create an account, you put in the mobile number of the SIM card in your tracker and that's it? Are there no charges for this at all?

Yea - there's some set up where you text like what numbers can control it, set the pin etc.

From giffgaff's side, you get free calls & texts to other giffgaff users for 3 months when you buy a goodybag or top up - so i got 3 months free when i topped it up, and when I get to the end of three months I'll either buy a £5 goody bag, or top up another £10 - depending on how much data etc i've used. Currently i've used 15p.

All in all i quite like it - with the orange.gpstrace, it sends it info when the car moves. The thing itself can also have a area set up, where if it moves out of that it rings you. I still need to play more with that, but need to be able to move the car (legally) to play

Once i've tried everything I may do a write up if it would be useful

Very pleased with Skytag. Had a text alert when garage fitted a new battery and always get through straight away with no being put on hold.
Have a google for a discount code usually one floating around for 50% off.
I saw recently in LRO or LRM magazines you get one free in a goody bag if you book an off road day or attend their show - details are sketchy!

The police do have tracker monitoring systems in certain vehicles but I think you will find this is only for Tracker UK products, as part of their network. I don't know if this works with other tracking device suppliers.

The advantage of products like skytag with subscription based support service is that they is paid to do the tracking work for you. They have monitoring staff to watch their system full of tracking devices 24/7. If one alerts them they react by calling all the numbers you’ve given them, mobile, home etc. If yer heap gets nicked you call the police for a crime ref then call skytag who then take over. Products with zone and time protection offer greater security to automatically alert if yer heap is moved. It seems these days an increasing number of vehicles are towed away rather than driven. So bypassing immobilizer and requiring keys isn't a requirement of the thief.

The alternative is to buy yer own location reporting device and do the tracking work yerself. This is cheaper to do. But it's a cost saving you need to consider with regards to having to do the tracking yerself, in the event of a theft. If yer on holiday or working away this could be difficult. So you need to make sure yer always able to respond to a call for help from yer own tracker. Most only have the ability to call one number and you need to test it regular to make sure it's working. Sim providers will select the "keep alive" option for sims used for commercial reasons. You may be able to get them to do this for yours.

On the subject of wanting to discuss the theft of yer heap with the recent new owner… there was someone who not long ago had a go at doing this. The result being the person ran off when disturbed. If he had of called the police and told them he's watching the theft of his vehicle happening now, I would have thought this would be seen as a priority and they would put the effort in to getting someone there to catch them red handed if someone is available. Instead he disturbed the thief and they ran oft. Not having a go ere as it was his choice and a split second decision, but he was sat in another vehicle which could have followed his heap if it had been driven/towed away. There's also the risk the thief may have weapons and a look out etc. I would hazard a guess skytag and others block you from seeing where the tracker is located once reported stolen so you don't spoil the surprise.

From what I see the skytag and paddocks supplied skytag device is the same thing, but one is half the price. Is it the same thing?
