White Smoke Worries

my 200tdi has a smokin problem. It's white smoke, loads of it when cold and also when I take foot off the gas when the engine is warmed up. My mate thinks it's a timing issue but wondered if anyone else had any words of wisdom?

How is it handling ? power ok ?

What does it smell like? Could be timing or fuel injectors need a clean.

Power I think is ok, won't go much over 60 mph but think that's normal.

Doesn't smell bad usual exhaust smell

How much smoke typically? Like a bit a puff of smoke or something on par with the election of a new pope?

Devinitely new pope, actually several new popes. Enough smoke to be a bit embarrassing. Worried the neighbours might be thinking I've bought a knacker
