White smoke but only when cold?

Hi all

Well have a problem but unsure what it is causing it?

On a cold start the discovery 1 300tdi seems to give off quiet a lot if white smoke and even more under acceleration but as soon as the engine warms up say 5 mins of driving it all clears up and then even sitting there with foot to floor there is no signs of it?

I have recently done a 250 mile round trip in it and it never lost any water at all? As I know white smoke is usually a sign of head going or gone?

Any ideas where or what else I can check?

normal for diesels to do that when cold

Is it? Mine produces quiet a lot till it warms up but as said all is fine then?

yes. Been driving and using diesels for 40+ years, either in vehicle, welders , or as power sources. never seen 1 that didn't. It is called dew point. Once warmed up white smoke stops, it is more steam than smoke A Google search will confirm

Well i have three diesels at the moment an non of them produce white smoke when there cold, unless the ambient temp is very cold around zero.
How does it start? white smoke can be caused by injection timing being out.

It starts first time every time no issues at all and seems to tick over and run fine

nope.Sometimes diesel engines emit a white smoke while starting. The white smoke is due to unburnt fuel caused by improper heating.

Diesel engines need high compression and heat for fuel combustion. It can be especially difficult to start a diesel engine during cold weather. Diesels with an engine temperature below about 80 F. will produce some white smoke during the first few seconds after startup. The content of white smoke is finely atomized raw fuel and water vapor. Most diesel cars and light trucks have glow plugs that help to heat the engine.

I have read the link but States a few seconds? So to me it's not because if this and something else? If it said few minutes then I would say you are correct?

Might be worn valve guide seals.

Worn valve guides/seals cause blue smoke due to engine oil getting past seals, normally

Most modern diesels don't use there glow plugs for starting there used at full load for emission reasons.

well they are for starting and run until temps increase in the engine block, to reduce the white smoke problem.

i bet it's blue and valve stem seals

when people say blue, they mean tinge not bright blue btw

Well I would say white, but may be blue will try get a video tomorrow if it is the seals would this cause it to stop when the engine gets warm? And any ideas on price to replace the seals?

Could also be the turbo

if it is blueish smoke
