ho god!
big job then....

sure its not the tyres as this noise has started recently...
hearing it more carefully, almost sure its definately coming from the front....

I might be able to get hold of a front diff, so maybe just easier to replace the diff?

bummer!! looks like no chippy run for me next weekend! :(

Replacement diff is quicker and easier.

To be honest diff whine can happen on almost new vehicles and I've also heard it on extremely high mileage vehicles ... doesn't necessarily mean it's going to let go, or that a failure is imminent, it's just the diffs way of saying it might need adjusting, or a change of oil even .. ;)

How loud is it? Do you strain to hear it over 'normal' noises? To be honest a whine could be so many things I wouldn't go diving in yet, perhaps doing the chippy run might be a good idea and let one of the more knowledgable folk on the run drive in it and have a listen ... might be something silly .. ;)

good idea Paul...
the only reason why i wouldnt go on the chippy run would be not knowing if im damaging something..

but would seem a waste not going on the run when I've spent the last 2 weekends welding my rear wheel arches!

i might do that, go on the run and ask someone if they can have a listen for it

I am sure International Rescue can come up with sommat - yu got a tow ball on the front of yours, JP?

no MHM, havent sorted my front recovery points yet... was going to buy jate rings, but now think i'll go for swivel pins on the bumper...

i find a tow ball on the front is good as well, if yu can fit it - it means yu can be towed home a lot easier - i made myself a tow bar comprising of a length of steel scaffolding pole with a tow hitch at each end - makes a nice solid "towing home" hitch.

Oooo... what a clever idea!
but my bumper is tubular so i cant really fit a tow ball anywhere...

just been under the disco to take the front prop out.... have I fok!!
the nuts wont move at all.. and is it some kind of specialist tool..? the 15mm socket is too big and the 14mm is too small!

or come down here, JP and we will remove it - easy peasy ;).

yu could, of course, weld a flat section onto the front to attach a tow ball - piece of U section girder?

9/16ths ... ;)

Spam follows ..

4x4 Store I have one and it's a really good tool I wouldn't be without!

MHM.. would you help me taking the thing off?
that would be cool... could show you my excellent (NOT) piece of welding engineering on the rear arches... lol

U section welded on the bumper sounds good....but with the tow ball, if I'm in a ditch and I need pulling out if a tow rope is around it and the vehicle pulling sits higher on a bank... would have the risk of it slipping out...unless i fit a D shackle..mmhh.... interesting!

the tow bar is just for transporting yu home - but the tow ball (with shackle) is a good fixing for towing out. I have one on Tufftee (the one in bits down my drive) that you can see.
If yu can make it tomorrow about 9am tomoz we can remove the front prop. Or if not - when?

cant do during the day mate :( im working...
finish everyday at 5 (at 4 if I work through lunch), or fridays i finish at 4 (3 if i work through lunch)

any good for you...?

lol Sirus!

MHM, yeh should be able to make it, I'll work through lunch to leave an hour early, so i dont get all that traffic on the main road.

hi jp
tried running it this morning in neutral on the tranny box.... my whirring noise is still there but only when its in d.... the noise doesnt happen when its in r????
dont have a clue what this means at all????
tbh i have further issues with my landy at the minute!!!!
why is it when you fix summat you find 3 other things wrong????
thanks arca

i think that's the joys of owning a land rover... fix one thing, brake 3....

the noise is still doing my head in... now i'm replacing all wheel bearings, so that i know its not that.

next step is taking the front prop out and drive with diff lock on while only on the rear wheels...
thing is, I've noticed the previous owner probably lost one of the nuts that holds one bolt on the prop.. so they have spot welded it!!

if after this, the noise is still there... I'm going to put it in the air with wheels off the ground and drive, so we can try and figure out from where the noise is coming..

Hahahaha!!! very true!!!

I just can't help it..I was driving the disco the other day and my missus started making clicking noises with her mouth every now and again just to annoy me.. took me fokin ages to figure that out, she only said it was her when I told her to jump on the back and figure out where the noise was coming from! hahaha
