Hi. I gained a new sound yesterday after coming down a bumpy track. The whining sound starts at 30 mph and gets higher pitched as speed increases. It drops off completely at 30 and below, and is non existent around town. It seems to come from the front left of the car, but it’s difficult to pin point noise with my hearing. Any pointers to cause would be helpful. Thank you.

Hi there, You need to tell us what car you have. Freelander 1 or 2? What engine you have and is it an auto or not.

It could be a number of things to be honest…

Does the noise change with road speed or engine speed?
Does it change/happen when in a particular gear, or neutral? With the clutch in or out?
Any difference when turning in a tight circle?

Does it still have a functioning VCU and 4wd? Have you done a ‘one wheel up test’ recently on the VCU?

Hi Freddie. The sound does not go away when I disengage gears. There is no sound initially. It comes on after a while and usually above 30mph. The sound gets more whiny with increase in speed and is constant. I thought I noticed a difference after turning tight at a roundabout. I don’t know about the VCU, I’m afraid.
