Hi
When at or close to full lock going forwards (3 point turn for example) I get a whining/rubbing noise from the front of the car, seems Ok in reverse.
It is a '05 TD4 and I have asked local 4X4 dealers if it could be the VCU and they all say they have never had one fail on the later FL's.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have ya looked to see if the tyre is rubbing?

Failing that burn it ;) :D

I seem to recall there is a thread on how to check your VCU I know what your local dealer said about VCU's in later FL's but to be honest I thought that was the FL2's that hadn't had a problem in that area.

I have seen many comments about testing the VCU I won't be convinced I am getting the right results, some say jack up the rear, some says thats rubbish and to put it in a vice so not going to do 'home tests'.

I think the "never known one fail" comment is a bit vague. 05 isn't that recent in car terms these days, how many miles has it done? I'm 99% that the VCU is still regarded as a consumable to be replaced every 70000 miles even by that reg year.

Could it be steering bushes or a power steering box noise? Have you had anything done to it recently that might have resulted in it not being put back together properly?

65k
Only makes the noise when moving so I don't think it is the rack.
I have had it for a year and it's done it since I got it.

You will notice a small amount of scratching on full lock with any VCU system, my VWs a bugger for it.
If you have the time, drop the prop and run in FWD mode, if it stops then you know it's VCU / prop related, if it doesn't then put it back on and I'll get my coat :)

it could be you power steering pump or Belt have you change the belt it is possible it has streched thus your squeeling noise as when you are on full look that is when the pump is doing all the work hope this helps

hi mr k,hope i can help you here, got an 05 aswell, had the same symptoms as you,got peed off with them, convinced myself it was the vcu. milage was 135k.had vcu replaced with a new one. noise still there. it is the pas pump have now found out.tim

I have the same problem. Have already changed the power steering pump and put new tyres on all round, done the VCU test and replaced the VCU bearings so now i am looking at the CV joints.

I know what a worn PAS pump sounds like on full lock, this is nothing like that, it is a friction rubbing noise that changes note with speed, rurr rurr rurr, rather than squeal fluid noises, unless LR use a unique PAS that makes different noises to all the cars I have owned that had worn PAS pumps.
