I have a sort of screeching whine that occurs when I decelerate that sounds like its coming from the transfer box. I am also leeking oil from around there which then blows back and contaminates the handbrake shoes renerding the handbrake all but useless when hot. Also when I put the handbrake on, on a steep hill it sort of clunks and slips backwards. You get a slight clunk when changing gear as well.

Other than that it drives fine on and off road. Clutch is normal with slip.

I killed both the diffs during the drowning incident when I also killed the engine. So now I have new Trutrac limited diffs so I know the problem does not lie there. So is it likely to be transfer box?

whining on over run is often diff espcially front has it done it since new diffs fitted, clunk is because of back lash in axles and maybe prop, rear out put seal is easy to change and fill rear with grease to hold garter spring in place ,removing t.box sump you can check adjust out any free play on intermediate gear

Thanks for the quick response James. It was always whiney. Then it howled like a jet engine all the time! New diffs and it's gone back to the whiney screech on deceleration. I have had four different diffs on in the last month while the ones on it now were converted to trutrac. So am pretty sure it's not diff related. I have checked the UJs on the ends of the drive shafts for play and they look fine with no detectable movement. Also cleaned out the telescoping bit and put new grease in as they had seized solid.

It's a weird sound. The whine is very gentle and on its own would be fine. It's the screech that's comes on initially lifting your foot which then goes as it slows down. Does not do it on acceleration.

id take a prop off at a time and try it in diff lock ,look at daft stuff like drive flange mud sheilds ,and intermediate gear ,but you can get similar with gearbox bearing races they are loose fit as std and some get worse ,i use loctite to secure them when rebuilding

Ok! Great advice as ever thanks. I will start with that and see where it goes. Mud shields are already eliminated as they are brand new on the diffs and are of the new internal type. Brand new internals on the diffs as part of the upgrade. So I am looking from drive shafts back to transfer box?
