Hi gents,

Looking to get a new set of tyres for the wagon and would like recommendations. As it's my only car I do everything in it - commute to work, gym etc as well as touring and general adventuring around Scotland. As a result it does a lot of road miles but also needs to be effective in severe Scottish winter conditions. I'm also planning on doing a trip through the Pyrenees (via a few greenlanes in England and Wales), taking in as many non tarmac tracks as possible . So basically I'm looking for an all terrain tyre (I think?) that is a bit of a jack of all trades that doesn't break the bank.
I'm also unsure as to which size to go for - the car is currently on General Grabber AT2's that the previous owner had put on but they seem over sized to me (265/70R17) and I'm scared that they will be causing extra component wear.
At the moment I'm looking at BF Goodrich All Terrains or General All Terrains. The Goodrich's seem a little more aggressive in tread pattern leading me to think they'd be better off road but less useful on the tarmac? Can anyone with experience of both give me their opinions? Not too worried with handling etc as I dont drive fast but I am concerned with fuel economy.
Sorry for the long thread chaps, just want to get as much info as poss before forking out a fair few notes..!

Cheers

I am not a tyre expert but...

Are you sure your existing ones are r17? Are they standard wheels? I thought it was either 16 or 18 on a d2 - almost all the tyre advice on here is for the sizes.

I'm no tyre expert. I have BFG on mine. Replaced front 2 after about 50k and the rear 2 are still going strong. I mainly do road miles and find these superb. I know that if required, they will go almost anywhere.

Many thanks for the replies! I'm not 100% on them being 17's but I don't think they're standard disco 2 alloys at any rate. Hoping they might be worth a few quid cos I'll be selling them when I get the new ones :D

I agree with higgo 17s are not standard but could be after market wheels, I am running the new grabber at's 255/18 which are fantastic, no road noise unlike the late at'2s but still aggressive enough to pull the big lump out of some sticky stuff, I got my at's online from tyre pnues and paid less than £100 each delivered to my door.

Cheers for the replies and shopping advice fellas. After a trip to the local independent landy garage, I can confirm the alloys are 17" disco 3 jobs that were adapted to fit the td5. Think I'm gonna replace them with some 235/70R16's in the GG AT. Seem to be a decent compromise.
Thanks again!

255 65 16, i have a spare set of 5 wheels! 2 with good tyres other 3 want changing, i was going to get em powder coated black and put BF's on, but that's another story!!! lol pm me if intrested

We have 255/65R16's on our D2 V8, we run Nexen Roadian A/T which have been excellent for our general driving and towing our big show trailer in Europe. On our second set now, first set did twice the mileage of the Pirelli's we had previously.

Yokohama Geolandar are another good tyre as mentioned by sierrafery above, we bought a set of these for our eldest son's Defender 110 CSW last year.
