Which Series advice

Hi all,
I'm new to the landy world and am after some advice I've read lots about good and bad landrovers but I have a quandary.
I'm going to look at 2 landrovers 1 is an 1970 series 2a original petrol engine priced at nearly £11k and a 1980 series 3 with a replacement diesel engine at nearly £9k, im not sure going forward as in maintenance spares reliability etc, hich would be the better option as I want a daily run about not a museum car that will just sit in the garage and im obviously willing to do the work to keep it going any thoughts.
 
At those prices I would imagine both vehicles are fairly 'sorted' and in good condition. If you don't know exactly what you're looking for, take someone with you who knows a bit about series Land Rovers. Its very difficult to say which vehicle would be better without seeing them both. And driving them. Older series diesels have a reputation for being smoky and gutless but I have driven some very good old 2¼ diesels. The petrols are fairly robust and are 'slightly' quieter and have slightly more power. Both will be as reliable as each other if serviced/maintained correctly.
 
Diesel will be massively cheaper on fuel, a point to consider the way things are going!
 
Thanks for the replies, you've made me think are they worth the money, they are not my first choice and have only considered them because all the others I have enquiried about have been sold, maybe worth waiting for the right one.
 
You dont need to worry about the availability of parts cos you can get just about anything for a series. A good chassis and bulkhead are the important things to look for. Avoid any that are blinged up. Fuel costs will be a problem if you intend to run it everyday on a budget. They are fairly simple mechanically and if you're ok with gettinng your hands dirty, most jobs can be done. My local garage are not landy specialists but are willing to fix anything I cant be bothered doing myself

Is the replacement engine a like for like 5 main bearing 2.25, you just say replacement? It is fairly common to replace these with a different diesel engine, be it something else from the land rover stable (2.5n/a, turbo, or tdi), but it is also not uncommon for other interesting things to be put in from a perkins through to exotic difficult to get hold of spares ones. Mazda and peugeot engines were often used in the 80s as replacements.
