Hi all,

I attempted to fit my 11" brakes to the landy this weekend and quickly realised I didn't have a box spanner big enough to fit the hub nut.

But in the process I also found my free wheeling hub was full of swivel oil.

Is it this seal thats gone LAND ROVER SERIES 2 AND 3 - Hub Oil Seal and Gasket Set to`80 (RTC3510GSET) | eBay

I'm just trying to get everything together for this weekend. I haven't had the hubs appart before.

normally it keeps drive shaft and drive member splines lubricated ,its then sealed with fibre washer behind nut or o ring for cap to sit over

As you have 11" brakes, would I be right in assuming that yours is a 1980 onwards Series 3? If so then I wouldn't expect swivel oil to be in the hub. The small seal in the stub axle carrier should prevent this. Only the older models had the felt washer arrangement.

edit - just seen your fitting 11" brakes so perhaps an older model. Still, I would have thought a serviceable seal in the stub carrier would prevent swivel oil working out that far.

Hi Land Raver, yeah thats right I'm upgrading to 11" so currently pre 1980 on 10 inch drums. I'll fit the seals anyway as they are only a couple of pounds each. Might as well while the hubs are out.

Oxides, I'll top up the swivels as some is bound to leak out. I'm using one shot grease at the moment as my swivel balls are shot. Thats a project for later on.
