Which Oils To Use + Swivel Grease

Hi there,
I would like to know what type of oil should be used in a 5sp manual gearbox, and which oil in the transfer gearbox for my 1984 2.5na LR90.

Also, if I decide to replace the swivel oil with grease, how much do I use? and how do you know when there is enough in the housing. With the oil you can judge were the level is but how do you do this with the grease.
 
Hi pal

In the gearbox you should only use ATF (automatic transmission fluid), the transfer box is normal gear oil.
With your swivels i would suggest using grease like you say, i did this with mine! You can buy it from Britool it comes in a tube which is the correct amount for one housng, its alot better than oil cause it doesn't leak out
 
Hi Graham, sorry for taking so long to get back to you, my phone was gubbed, bloody BT, anyway thanks for the info regarding the oil types, the swivel grease, would I be able to obtain this at a accessory shop or would I need to go to a Land Rover dealer

The stuff i got was a Britpart item but from my local landrover parts specialist (not a main agent) it is especially good if the swivels are pitted like mine are it still doesnt leak!! The shop is called Buckley Bros it is both mail order and over the counter www.landroverspares.co.uk or 01254 208042 most parts are always off the shelf or over night if not (christ anyone would think im on commission ha ha) i would deffenetly recomend them though, ever since getting my 90 i spent most of my time and money there ha
 
yer can use gl5 in yer diffs unless yer got artic diffs fitted which have fosspurr bronze bits in em, yer can't use gl5 in a series box cause it will eat away at the syncros.
 
MTF-94 is sometimes hard to get, though I think LR Stealers™ sell it in the UK. Difflock make a good synthetic, so I hear, it is a 70w GL-4. So is Redline MTL, very good but expensive, though you never need to change it. Some people swear by Dexron III synthetic ATF's, like Shell Donax TX or Castrol Transmax Z. I used to run MTF94, but used the last of my 20l can a month ago. Switched to MTL and the change is better. All the above synthetics will make your box last longer, and they do cost a bit to fix, so it is worth it.
