Hi guys n girls I need some advice on what to buy? are discovery td5's generally ok? I have been offered my mates on a x plate full history very clean motor 130k on clock its a basic model with no air con or sunroofs which is what I want! needs welding work on rear chassis legs as they are going, need it for pulling a trailer and collecting lawnmowers so motorway driving is a must? I owned a defender before but don't think its the motor for the job, the question I am asking everyone is do I buy a disco or not?

cheers lee

Great for almost anything you can think of, buy it if the price is right, all the D2's are starting to show rear chassis rot, but only at the back, the rest seems OK on most.

TD5's have a number of issues, mostly sorted now:

Cracked cylinder heads
Leaking injector seals
Oil on the injector loom and ECU plug
Fuel Pressure Regulator leaks
EGR valve/actuator seizing

I'm not a big fan of the TD5 but there are thousands out there with happy owners.

£2500 doesn't sound bad.

if you get a good one and look after it ther great yeah bad design on head dowels and head casting round injectors. I have had mine for a fair few years and it's cost me less than any car i have had in saying that the rear chassis is starting to look ropey to say the least. Might of bought a pearler but touch wood can't fault the beast.

he wants 2500 for it which I thought was ok? are the engines ok on them?

In my opinion and without seeing it, £2500 is far too much for a basic spec TD5 with a ####ed chassis rear half.

Have a good look around, TD5's are available on Ebay from £1500.

Buy on condition and don't pay too much - always leave some money out of your budget for repairs.

That was my though too - even tho I ended up with a 300, I saw a fair few td5s around for under 2k that dont necessarily need too much work to get em ship shape...

I thought 2500 was reasonable for one with full history and when you know the vehicles history? Alot of the ones on ebay have alot more than 130k on the clock and have no history?
