Which 88" chassis do I have ?

Can someone offer me some pointers on how to tell visually whether an 88" chassis is Series 2, 2a or 3.

There is no stamped VIN as the dumbiron was replaced.

Its a rolling chassis which has been shot blasted, galvanised and painted.

It has been offered to me for a good price.

The seller claims it is a 1961 Series 2, it comes with a genuine loose vin plate, reg plates and a V5 but I want to be sure its not a ringer.

I know its not a Series 1 as they have a curved bulkhead outrigger, it not a lightweight chassis either.

If its got seams on the top and bottom of the chassis rails its a 3. If the chassis rails are welded up from 4 pieces of plate, its a 2 or 2a.
 
What does a replacement chassis come with from a re- manufacturer? Vin plate\v5 you have... belt the numbers on to chassis with a punch set as they did in the factory...or is that not allowed... Your not going for a re-reg as you have the necessary docs.
 
SWB chassis are all plate not joined like later LWB
Early chassis has deeper web at gearbox cross member needs cutting if fitting series 3 clutch type gearbox.

I have checked and it is made up of 4 pieces welded at the edges, no sign of a seam in the centre of the top or bottom section.

So it would appear that its a Series 2/2a, so probably the 1961 chassis from the VIN, ID etc that the seller claims it is.

Hi Karl,

Before assuming anything, Blackburn's suggesting that all SWB chassis are all plate welded which could mean that your plated welded chassis could still be S3. That's news to me but I am not an expert on the subject. It might be worth checking this out before doing anything drastic.

I recall that my 1982 SWB chassis was C-section but I'll have to have a look at some photos on the computer when I get home to confirm.
 
Re DVLA and chassis stamping, I got into an argument over something esle on my series and in discussions the DVLA person explained that while the vin number is treated as unchangable on unibody cars and the chassis is taken as the basis for a separate chassis car, Series are treated differently because both the chassis and the body were available as spare parts and so they recognise that numbers can be restamped onto replacement parts. My argument was about changeing the body style which they refused because they explained it is not a permanent change, you can unbolt the bits and change it back (annoyingly fair point).
