Has anyone ever used a hi-lift jack for it's intended purpose?
Yes all the time ...

Currently holding up the chassis/body of my D90 as I change the suspenders. It lives in the back against the nearside wheel arch, held on with 2 x 12mm anti-vibration bobbins. It fits perfectly between the bulkhead and the back door.
Great for lifting the side or ends of the car up. Perfect for when you get stuck in a deep rut, lift the wheel, pile in braken, sticks etc and then drive out.

One (prior to spring retainers) I popped the rear spring out after an energetic offroad drive thgrough a ditch and it "POPPED" the back tyre.

I also use my hi lift for jacking when some height is needed.
I can see you are on the level miktdish but lift the other wheel off the ground and the truck can roll, the jack rotating in the hole even hand brake is on and diff lock in.
Some chocks would be good and if nothing else is available stack spare and removed wheel under the gearbox cross member for extra safety.
 
Yes, they can roll off if you unwieght more than 1 wheel/axle. Currently the car is up with the front wheels chocked, the chassis (both side, just behind the gearbox x-member) on axle stands and the rear axle on a hydraulic jack, and i'm still nervous. Especially when undoing bolts with an extended bar .....
They are scary without a doubt but i'd not be without one.

I've used one a few times for the intended use when off road, and also to cast a Landy out of deep ruts.
The most use I have put it to though is moving large baulks of timber - typically oak beams up to a ton - and pulling fence posts out of concrete footings.
I have also been next to an experienced marshal who was distracted by a third party and got ****ted in the head with the handle, that was a trip to casualty for a check up, just goes to show that you need to treat the things with a LOT of respect. The time you need to use one is not the time to practice, do that in a safe place beforehand.
 
Hi, Bought my first Defender 90 3 weeks ago and I'm loving it but that huge jack is a right pain!! lol

Is there a padded bag you can get for it or is there a place to put it that could potentially save my dogs life? :);)

It lives behind the front seats with a little rubber O-ring that clips it to the bulkhead. I can't really see how it is a pain. It just lives there, I haven't found it a problem over the last 16 years! I tend not to use it right enough preferring a bottle or small trolley jack, however I keep the original jack because it has other uses. I also carry a 4 foot wheel brace with mine.

Yes if under the front or rear towbar is correct. Then push the vehicle over out of the ruts. Use it on the trailer aswell. Been saying il get a new jokey wheel for the last 8 years.

Bought cheap second hand brackets for it in the back now I have a dog. Always need it when I'm not carrying it. Carry a sgs bottle jack for punctures and have a trolley jack for at home.
