Hello, does anybody know when did the p38 facelift occur, what were the differences and how do you establish whether you have an early or later diesel engine? Many thanks, Gaz.

Its a bit difficult. The official change over was 1999 but I have a 1999 reg (T) 98MY with the EGR. Mine was one of the DHSE specced DSE' s (DHSE only came in with the facelift) LR trialed for a while before the changeover. The clear lenses should be a giveaway but loads of people retro fitted them. Another indicator is the colour of the lettering on the dials but again many of the people who clear lensed theirs also did the instrument pack. Other are chrome internal door handles and the deep cupholder in the cubby.

So I have a genuine EGR equipped DSE without the clear lenses thats a factory 98MY.

HTH add to the confusion :)

Can I just chip in with a related question.....

What is the difference that makes a DT a few BHP & torque less than a DSE? On the remapping sites they always seem to be listed with separate power outputs on the same years. I thought it was purely trim that was the difference?

I'm not aware of any difference between them. There may have been some difference in the very early years (1994,1995) but the original brochure from 1997 certainly does not make any distinction between the power of DT and DSE and only lists one set of power outputs for the diesel engine - 136 PS at 4,400 rpm and 270Nm at 2,300rpm. I've noticed this before too but I think that one of the tuning companies just got some wrong data and it spread between them. There were quite a few variants of the M51 engine between BMW, Opel and Land Rover, this may have been the source.

Historically manufacturers have upped the power of air conditioned and automatic vehicles to make up for the loss of power from ancillaries but I don't believe this is the case here since the DT was a downgraded RR not the other way round. IIRC the DT still had aircon just not automatic climate control

My 96 DT spares dog does not have aircon or the normal HEVAC just 3 knobs for adjustment.

I believe mine is of the newer generation - Registered 30th September 1999

Other Subtle Differences are (which mine have):

EGR on Engine
Pleated Leather Door Cards
Leather Door Pulls with larger padded area

I am sure there are other differences too, but these are the ones I noticed when I was looking for another P38.

Incoming spanner Spud, my DT has HEVAC climate control aircon and it was registered on the 01/02/1995....

Many thanks for the replies, coincidentally mine was registered on the same date, 30th September 1999. If you needed to put an older diesel into a newer car would it be ok, assuming you used the newer management systems.

HEVAC, heated seats and sunroof were available as an option on the DT, things like cuise control, trip computer and electric seats were not. I guess there are no hard and fast rules, the only truly distinguishing mark being whether you have a high or low line BECM.

Unfortunately I only have a lowline becm as standard fitment although I do have a couple of highlines in the office just case, fortunately I do not have a sunroof.

PS. Does anyone know when the first P38 was registered???

The engine appears the same (I have an early and a late) just the inlet and exhaust manifolds, vacuum pump on the front of the cam cover, EGR valve and control and of course the EDC. So to put an early engine in a late car basically just swap manifolds and fit the vacuum pump.:) Just remembered, injector 4 is different and will need to be swapped. Don't know for certain that the FIP is the same.

Swapping manifolds might not be so easy. There are different bolt patterns between at least some (if not all) of the plastic and metal manifolds.

Besides the different bolt pattern for the later plastic inlet manifold I read somewhere that the later heads also have some internal differences. Specifically what the differences are I don't know. Maybe these are less prone to cracking?
