I'm kind of the opinion not to touch the Rangie apart from standard maintenance in case I upset her and she throws a wobbly. However, a casual conversation with a mechanic supplied the "fact" that the 2.5 diesel water-pump fail "regular as clockwork at 120k miles". Seeing as mine is coming up to 120k miles, would it be worth replacing it as preventative maintenance?

Temperature absolutely fine and steady when driving. And, of course, I have no idea if it might have been done by a previous owner!

(1995, 2.5DT, by the way.)

I think it is worth replacing it. My husband had to replace ours in our 2.5dt, only because the fact that the blades had melted and the radiator exploded while climbing a hill with a 3 ton trailer attached. I don't think it would be difficult to replace as my husband had replaced it three times, it took him a couple of hours to change. Getting a part made by suppliers trusted by any Land Rover owner is the safest option. I had bought an after market water pump with metal blades, It did work until the seal on that went, took the blade and put it on original pump, that worked until the seal in that went too, but it is about 15 years old, ended up getting a part from either Britpart or the other one I can't remember the name at the moment.

It's better to replace it before it breaks down!

I have just replaced my timing chains and checked the water pump and it was a plastic impeller so i replaced it but it still looked in good condition after 170000 miles.

I replaced mine after a aux belt pulley digested it's bearings. Figured since I had the front of the engine off I might as well replace that too. It looked healthy enough and no records of it being changed by former keepers. That was done at about 180,000 miles.
