Just swapped the tacky 18 inch aftermarket alloys for a set of "Freedom" alloys, which I thought were the same as the original ones. (The car is a 2002 registered ES S/Wagon). The bloke drove off with my old wheels and I didn't think to check that the replacements would fit OK, as they're Landrover standard!

Unfortunately, they're different and don't seem to fit correctly!

The "new" ones seem to fit closer and the right hand front one catches the brake calliper slightly. The back ones seem to press down on the brake drums.

The difference is that the replacement ones don't have little holes in between the bolt-holes, like the old one (still my spare).

I'll try and put pictures on here, when I work it out.

In the meantime, can I just put 5mm wheel spacers on to push them out from the hub a bit?

Here's the original spare from my vehicle, note the holes between the bolts...

Here's the replacement alloys with no little holes...

Just checked the wheels on my Freelander which is a SE but Y reg and they are the same design as the one shown as your spare. Could they be off an even later model that is very slightly different to yours?

Steve:)

I think that they changed the wheels on later models and thats why you are having problems.

I'm looking for an answer too as I have a 1998 Freelander and was planning to upgrade the alloys, but want to be sure that whatever LR items I buy will fit without catching etc.

Fancy some 16 inch Freedom wheels??? ;o)

I have to say I am really ****ed off with this car already...

Not because I was stupid enough to swap the wheels without checking them first, but because on top of a host of tiny annoying problems (interior lights, fron CV joint click etc) the f**king sunroof has just jammed open.

Only had it a week and I'm starting to see why the Freebie has such a bad reputation. If anything else goes wrong, I'm sticking the damn thing in Autotrader.

Mine are 16 inch too.

The 18 inchers I was referring to were non-standard.

Anyway, just bought some 3mm spacers, so fingers crossed that they sort the job out until I can lay my hands on some original wheels...

Mines a March 01 and I have 16" with the small holes as your spare.
I was looking at putting some 25/32mm spacers on my landy to widen the track. However, I have been informed that the spacers will place extra stress on the wheel studs.
Is this true?

Yes, it's true for any car that the bigger the spacers you use, the more stress on the studs.

The 3mm ones I've got are about as big as I'd go to be honest and they're just to clear the brakes a bit more.

So how would I be best to go about moving the wheels out to acheive a wider track?
I assume fitting a different wheel, but how do I know without actually physically trying one if its going to have the desired result?

Would have to say no matey - just bought the car and spares this month so very low on cash.

Plus my car came with 15 inch alloys two of which have brand new tyres.

Any ideas from the Guru's - Did they change the offset on later models? The PCD must be the same for them to fit the studs.

You could try googlin Matt Lee engineering and give him a ring.
He makes the MACH 5 wheels and knows his stuff reguards to the max tyre sizes and offset of the wheels etc, not sure if hes done any for the hippo yet,but could be worth a phone call.

Tiny came with Factory fit 5 spoke 15 inch wheels and I upgraded to '05 16 inch "vortex" wheels - they fit straight on and she is an old 98 model. There must be some strange voodoo going on with your new wheels...

well ive got abit to add on this one:

I have an 04 Freelander S and its startin to get down the tyres and im not sure what to go for next, i like some of the wheels that are fitted to other madels in the landrover range, but that are the likely hood of them fitting/not fitting: Ie Disco 3 on my car etc, is there any info on the cross fitment of wheels like there is for the peugeot that i also run??

Ta

I was just looking on Ebay and someone is selling a set of similar wheels to the ones you have with no extra holes (270014988715), he quotes the part number as RRC002960MNH. If that is the right part number for the wheels in his pictures and they are the same design as yours, then maybe a call you the local dealer could put you right as to why they wont fit your model of Hippo.

Steve :)

Sorry you have got a bad deal.

The Freelanders up-sized the brakes front and rear from 2001/02 onwards. Hence the Freestyle and other rims from 2001/02 had more clearance on the internal part of the wheel.

I have brochures for parts/accessories for the Freelander from 2000- 2003

The wheels listed in 2001/2002 state that they are only suitable for that year of vehicle, although shouldnt be a problem fitting newer wheels on older vehicles because of the smaller brakes.

My Freelander has steelies on it, was offered a mint set of 16" freestyle wheels for £250 inc tyres.

You shouldnt have any probs getting buyers, but the value drops right out of alloy wheels, as for steelies you couldnt give them away. Hence a spare set in my garage LOL

So it would appear that you have a set of the wheels with the slightly smaller interior diameter fitted to the later models. So if someone who has one of those later models that is fitted with the wheels that have the additional holes as per your picture you could arrange a trade.

Just a thought.
