I want to revisit this question of 7" rims with M+S tyres on a p38.

I didn't get any tyres last december, so I still have these disco rims waiting. The reason it's become more important is that we are just moving to a house in a forest on a hillside, and there is an unmade track 350m long to the house from the main road. The track only goes to the house, so it's only us and the postman who will use it.

I will need decent tyres to get up in the ice and snow, possibly a little mud, but I'm less sure if it will be ok to have them on 7" rims.
 
Just read the thread again and take notice of what you were told then. I have a steep 100 yard plus unmade drive that also twists and turns. My P38 on standard wheels and road tyres has never had a problem with it in any conditions.

Marks and Spencer are ok. Winter tyres are a waste of time with the winters we get. I can't think of a reason you would fit narrower tyres in bad conditions. Using that theory fit some mountain bike tyres and you will never get stuck. :D:D
 
I knew someone would make that quip.

Winters over here are worse than you get. Usually snow and lots of it. Temperatures of -8 are common. We have seen -18 in recent years.

If you think you need winter tyres then fit some nobblies to your 7 inch rims. Use the guidelines in this link. Going a few mm over the recommended widths should not be a problem. In snow drop the pressures a bit but don't go screaming up and down snow free autoroutes with lower pressures. Had temperatures of -17 here and lots of snow on the hills from the river valley, the P38 on Wranger M+S has never shown so much as an iota of wheel spin. No snow this winter, so don't know haw the Nexen Rodians will fare but I don't forsee a problem.
Winter tyres are good in icy conditions and are mandatory in some areas. I have a set of 16" alloys that i would like to put winter tyres on but there is always something more important to spend the cash on and the P38 seems to cope anyway.
 
Last time it snowed - I hunted out a hilly area with virgin snow and did my best to get stuck on my General Grabber ATs - the traction was startling. I went up stupidly steep hills - descended them again in total control - not a scare in sight. All on tyres that are great in the dry and wet, last forever and are quiet too.
 
I normally run good at tyres which carry the m+a rating all year round with no problems. I have never had an issue even with the episodes of uber snow a few years back. Whilst in America where the winters are a lot lot worse full winter tyres did prove useful but good AT tyres have always been fine for me over here and I live up north!
