wheel/tyre help!

hi all,

Apologies if this is a daft question...

I'm currently running 235/85/16 on a boost alloy (assuming 7/7.5 wide) on a 2003 defender 90 td5. Ive been looking at modular 16x8 and BF 235/85/16, would this work?

Tyersizecalculator.com says this for 16x8:
Minimum tyre width 215
Ideal tyre width 225 or 235
Maximum tyre width 245

The 85 bit of your 235/85/16 refers to the sidewall of the tyre being 85% of the width, so those would be roughly 200mm giving ( 16inch rim + 200mm sidewall + 200mm sidewall ) 31.5 inches tall.

Tyre width range depends on the actual tyre being fitted. I have 265 bfg's fitted to my 16x8 rims and this is outside the tyresizecalculator specs but is within the BFG tyre specs. I think that Tyresizecalculator is aimed at car tyres rather than large off road tyres which have a large sidewall profile.

@JtD88 according to BFG the rim width range for a 235/85/16 is 6-7.5 so unfortunately these tyres are too narrow for those wheels. Please find the full bfg specs here (link).

I completely agree, the only reason I am aware of this is because I looked into it when I got my wheels and tyres (I wanted HD (wolf) wheels, but they are too small). In the end I gave up trying to find standard information and found the manufacturers recommendations. Just for information these are also not standard

different manufactures have different guidelines for the same specification!

But they aren't standards, just one sites opinion. Many tyre makers also say wider tyres are fine for an 8" wide rim. But it also depends on the profile and the construction, often higher ply (or higher load rating) tyres of the same size might not be recommended for the same range of rim widths, even if they are the same size otherwise.

Yes that will be fine. Most aftermarket rims can be had in different offsets, this will allow you to move the wheels a little more outbound for a wider track. This will change the stance a little and generally allow you to adjust the steering stops for more lock. Or you can go for something nearer to stock offset. Totally up to you.

16x8 will also be fine for 265/75R16 tyres, which are also a factory fit and look a bit more chunky or if you want bigger a 255/85R16, but sadly choice is limited in this size.

They will not be fine as it is outside the tyre manufacturer's specification for that sized tyre. the rim will be fine for the vehicle with different tyres and the tyre will be fine with the vehicle with a different sized rim, but not together. The previously linked document from the BF website (the brand OP is looking at) gives the specifications for each tyre size, and 8" rim is too wide for the 235/85/16 tyre.

It will still be fine.

It's only outside the recommend or approved. In much the same way Land Rover only recommend or approve 16x7 or 16x6.5 rims for a Defender.
