My husband and I have just plunged into landrover ownership and bought a series 3 SWB for £300

it doesnt start at the moment and we hoped it was the battery but that seems fine. looks like its the starter motor.

While fiddling my husband starting turning the fan commenting on how stiff it was and at the same time I noticed fluid starting to leak from a pipe at the top of the engine.

I have attached a pic of the pipe in question, Is this the fuel filter and is it leaking fuel???. Our diagram of the fuel filter in our manual looks nothing like this. (and mentions a glass bowl)

My hubby has very basic mechanical skills (I Think) so any advice would be appreciated especially as he wont take it to a garage (he says they are all cowboys) and refuses to ask advice from anyone (manly ego - possibly) So I am asking for him.

Thanks in advance

just to clarify, the pipe in question is the silver one, hubby says its attached to the carburettor on the right. It is leaking fluid that looks and smells of petrol whenever the fan is turned.

yup thats yer petrol pipe. if you follow it back down you'll find the fuel pump. take orf the glass bowl and make sure its clean. then replace ensureing the ribbuer ring is replaced correctly. if you have fuel at the carb ( which seems likey if its leakin from the pipe). take the big pipe off the top and work the throttle while looking down the carb. you should see petrol being squirted into the engine. don't fergir to fix the leak first.

if all that is fine check you got a spark next.

what is the proper name for this pipe so I can get another one to replace it. How much should I expect to pay for it.

Thanks SLOB your advice is very helpful and I actually understood what you said.

you should just be able to pick up pipe sutable for petrol from you local suppliers and a couple of jubilee clips to attach it at each end.

If the fuel pipe is naff, it might be a good idea to check all your hoses. And also use new petrol to start.
