I went to look at a Freelander today. I'm thinking of buying it to either do up or use the bits off it to get mine back to 4WD.

On the IRD I noticed a big 'block' that's bolted on with the rear pinion - it looks like the bolts go through the pinion mounting holes, then through a bracket holding this block and then secure into the IRD casing. The block looks to wrap around the top of the pinion. I'm sure mine didn't have this block and in pictures of IRDs I don't recall seeing this block before. It looks like some kind of damper.

Does anyone know what it is? Is it usually found there! Here's a pic...

I did a google image search IRD, and did find a pic that looks like it...

Cheers.

Its actually a nice looking motor - just a very dirty one - and it has a decent dent in the drivers side rear door! Got a few nice touches as well like the cup holders & center console that will go nicely in my L Series as well as the roof rails. I checked the oils and it looks fresh and is spot on Full - as is the coolant. I can't work out why its had the air filter housing and associated pipework removed!

Its a anti vibration damper. It is mounted only on 1.8 petrol engine cars, because the engine (and whole drive unit) is lighter than diesel, so it can go in to some sort of bad vibes.

I have those cup holders in mine, they're awesome, a lot better than the holders in my disco!

It does look good, makes you wonder what work they were doing to it as the under tray has been removed along with the air intake etc, I think they took the engine apart.

I would probably only use it as a donor car if it was cheap enough

That will be why I haven't noticed it on mine then lol

Yeh, I was wondering what they were doing and trying to fix. That's why I was suprised to see good oil and water levels - and clean as well.

There must be something up because the car has been "deregistered" - which means they have actually cancelled its legal registration to be on the roads. This does not happen without good reason for a car that would be for sale at £2,500 - probably £4,000 on a Chch forecourt. Basically insurance write offs. The dent in the back door is not a small one, but it is only the door. It means though its value will be a lot lower :) Will cost $500 to put it through compliance and make it road legal again if it was fixed up.

Off to bed now, thanks for the responses :)

Morning!

I'll see how the auction goes. #HTR picked up his non-roadworthy Freelander for $1K (registered but broken cambelt), we'll see how much this goes for. There will be buyers fees of $280 at Turners and another $80 for trailer hire.

If I get it, I probably won't swap the 4WD over straight away. The ski season is finishing now and my other primary need for 4WD is the Salmon fishing season which doesn't start until February, although it will be useful for the Searun Trout in November. I'll spend my time trying to get it going first, then I might be able to get it going, get my money back selling it as a 2WD or at least a proven working K Series & box to sell as parts.

The drive/garage is pretty full at the moment, what with 2 kids at home who each drive and have their cars plus our Freelander & Starlet. Our L Series ain't going nowhere and we've had the Starlet for 12 years - so that ain't going anywhere either, its like a family pet. I have a part of our section that I can't be bothered to mow and is affectionately known as 'the Meadow' - it'll end up in there with my other toys, although I think I'll come under pressure to offload the 109 SSW!

Going to explore the 'dark side' of the Freelander range?

Have you seen the 01 FL1 TD4 on turners, $1410 and has 201,000km?
Yeh, it went though an auction and didn't sell, then they listed it as a $4500 (or $4,950) buy now and it didn't sell, now the owner's obviously 'given up' and told Turners to 'sell it'! Got to go for over $4K you'd think.

There was an L Series in Dunedin that went through the Damaged Car auction last week. It didn't sell at $650 (or there abouts) but I see its been removed so presumably negotiated afterwards.

I got cheeky and called the number on the car's sign writing :)

They were happy to talk about it. Evidently back in December someone went into the side of it - hence damage to rear passenger door. They said that this damaged the chassis and effected the drivers door. I saw no evidence of damage to anything other than the door. However, back in May it slid on ice and something did damage to the engine area from underneath - bumper & wheel/suspension looked fine.

So definitely looks like its not going back on the road. The IRD should be OK, which is my main requirement and lots of other bits that I can use and keep as spares. Not sure if I'd be able to sell the engine or box though.

Anyway, bidding opened at $1,000, then went down to $500 - so I gave it a click. Nobody else bid and it didn't reach reserve, so not sold/bought....

yet....

There was a damaged Freelander in the auction down in Dunedin a couple of weeks back that didn't sell at $650... but that was never relisted so might still get myself a good 'bargain'. :)

I got woke up by a call from the auctioneers this morning at 8:20AM!

He said the reserve was $1,000 would I go to that? I said with a whack at both ends and the one at the front possibly taking out the engine and box, its not every going back on the road and missing valuable scrap parts, so its not worth that. I offered $625.

30 minutes later he's back on the phone saying the insurance co will go to $700, and it hasn't had either whacks! So I told him I'd spoken to the previous owners and it HAS got that damage and I won't go over $625, even if its relisted. So he said he'll go look at the car himself, get back to the insurance co and will call me back!

I suspect the 'reserve' was $1,000 but the 'hidden reserve' was $700, so he will now really go speak to the insurance co.
