It is a hard thing. Its a bloody useful and protective addition but so easy to go OTT. There was a pic on here somewhere of a Fender which was literally 50% plate... and a Defender/Series which was plate inside and out, the windows, the dash, the floor, everything. (edit - literally posted as I was typing!)

IMO wing tops, rear quarters, sills, door tops on certain models. Any more is OTT
 
Is there really a Defender under that??
I think he/she started it as repairs then went overboard as it just gradually rotted away!!! Beware of the checkerplate chassis!!!

I lost count the number of times that I had to kneel on them during the rebuild
