manifold came off tonight and whilst there was a small tear at cyl 4 exhaust that may have been where it was a bit stuck on the manifold there and to the head in the middle. It's due a coolant change any way so whilst I've got the manifold off and I'm draining it, it seems sensible to pull the head and change the head gasket, at least then I know it's good for however long a head gasket lasts these days

I did have a spark plug (on a motorbike that blew/chuffed where the porcelain met the metal body/nut part but it would only do it whilst riding (under load) & I eventually found it after a good thrashing at night & it was still glowing when I pulled up (as it used to lose power when it happened).

If you had one of those plastic garden wood choppers with the windmill attached you could wave it around the engine bay and see where it chopped the fastest.

I always find a blown gasket quite satisfying when you find it, the ones that bug me are no visible evidence, so you repace the gasket and the problem is fixed!

Will you be buying a big pile of injector sealing washers. I find it’s the most annoying addition to cylinder head wrestling.
Even when checking tauque several weeks down the line, the injectors have to come out again to get at the ruddy bolts.

Torque wrench, what's that? Don't you just tighten it up till the breaker bar starts to bend?

Strange thing though, before i start a job on the car i always have a look at you tube, on here etc to find any tips or hints or just to see the actual thing instead of just reading the manual. one of the videos I watched was this one and his gasket went in exactly the same place mine did, except his made a knocking noise and mine was chuffing

While you have the head off it would be worth turning the engine over so you can check the camshaft for wear. Pull each lifter in turn and check the wear pattern underneath

The chuff noise is where the gasses flow from piston to other piston chamber past the broke gasket.
Some times makes a noise on combustion as fuel not igniting/compression correctly
Any damage to the head/block where the gasket failed ?
no damage, just a little carbon which wiped off - probably because it started 2 minutes from home and i went straight back home so it hasnt been run for very long like it. checked its flat and no issues.

You lot will have the whole engine stripped down at this rateYea. Pop the bottom end off anorl and check the big end shells
