What's good about a disco??

So after recently buying my td5 and joining your forum I see there are many faults with the disco's, electrics being the main from what I've seen, and rust on the earlier ones.

Instead of all the threads about what's wrong with them, why not have one listing the good things?

What's good about the disco?

The engines seem pretty bullet proof??
A nice level of comfort, well mines the Es

Any more for any more?
 
gotta say, ive just bought a 2004 landmark td5, and its surprised me how nice it is to drive, its still on the air suspension, which handles great, Iplugged my hawkeye in and the only fault ive found is the airflow reading is low on tickover, but ive ordered a new maf to sort that, and a full service later all is good.
and its a nicer to drive than my td5 110
 
As good off road as a defender (pretty much) but much more civilised inside. Cheap to buy, solid chassis on a 300, cruise at 70mph like a car, look good I think and spares and mods cheap and accessible. Rusty bodies aside a 300 is a solid workhorse that will do mega mileage. R380 keeps going as do tdi engines, you can fix a tdi on roadside with a small toolkit.
Getting rarer as well.
 
Love my 300 tdi disco ,has a few electrical faults and is rusty but show me a 20 year old car that isnt (unless its been welded already !)

Mine got me to work this morning through 18 inch snow drifts and it cost me £750

runs on veg oil great motor
 
Good for being a passenger in too - in the back as well as in front. Sitting nice and high, you can see stuff you wouldn't see in an normal car. And because it's nice and airy inside, my daughter doesn't vom - bonus!
 
Good driving position, still bloody capable off road in stock form (D2 TC is quite awesome :D :D ). Wannabee levels of Range Rover/luxury trim inside. Good amount of storage space, like a den on wheels! :D
 
The best long-distance tow car by far, at an affordable price.

We regularly tow our big 3500kg trailer to Europe, the Disco does it with some style.

Pity the TD5 was never properly developed by Land Rover, that could have been a really good engine.

I was about to start a "reasons why I love my Disco" thread!

Heres a few:
last Monday, picked up car after new gearbox and t.box fitted by Ashcrofts, drove to Girvan, Scotland that night.

Tuesday, drove round various bits of Girvan installing equipment, got stuck in a field, used winch, got unstuck!

Weds, finished job, only because we had the Disco to get up n down muddy tracks, drove back to Bedford via A70, lots of snow, hail, stuck cars, followed the trucks doing crazy speeds on snowy M74! Got home 03:00 AM!

Car never missed a beat, felt very safe and more importantly we got the job done and got paid!

It's the only car I know of that you can drive 500 miles in a day in comfort, drag a 1500 Kg caravan as if it wasn't there, then unhitch and drive up muddy and rocky lanes in perfect control.
 
One minute its a car to go out to dinner in, then its a seven seater, pop the rear seats up its a van, then its a very capable off roader, it can tow a house, it runs on veg oil, mines done 210k and still runs great, what other car can do that lol
 
1992, 200tdi, 140000 on the clock up until this week never had a major problem comfy drive, could'nt think of anything better to play (laning, offroading) in
 
I shouldn't of read this, iv been looking at discos for the last couple of weeks and instead of been put off by all the niggly problems its just made me more interested, I think the disco 2 TD5 is the one for me, im sick of having to go begging when I want heavy towing doing and id love to have a play off road, my focus estate isn't much good in mud!

Also seeing all the help and advice you guys on here are happy to give makes me less nervous about trading an incredibly reliable car for one well known for its problems, I must be mad!
 
Thats what im talking about, nice to hear some good points, now im off to start a thread asking for help to fix my faults :lol:
 
The heaters work!!

Been in many 90's during winter and it was hell. Never got hot.

Winter at the moment sweating buckets and cruising with windows down.

Comfortable environment, great add ons. Easy to work on and a joy to own. Just modify for your needs.
 
The Disco 2 looks better than the later Discos; something to do with the shape of the back end, and the spare wheel is where it's supposed to be.

I believe that the VED is less for the Disco 2 than for the later models (two hundred and odd as opposed to four hundred quid).

They do have their ideosycracities, but like all machines if you treat them right and look after them properly they will repay you in spades, but don't forget the shovel if you're going off road.

Yes, there's a load of elastic-trickery in the Disco 2 but if you keep it dry then it seems to be fairly reliable.

It is said that the Disco 2 is the last Land Rover which you could fix at the side of the road with a 'ammer.
