In this hypothetical world, you have been given a completely stock Freebie 1. You've taken it for a test drive and everything works. Its not perfect as it has 100,000 miles on the clock but it starts and stops when it should. The only problem? No service history at all.

You are also - by amazing coincidence - the lucky winner of a competition which means you dont have to pay for any parts, servicing, labour etc for anything to do with fixing up/modifying/improving it from any company that supplies bits for it.

What improvements would you make?
 
I'll start


  • With no service history I would begin with a full major main dealer service
  • Replace all belts and hoses with OEM
  • New starter motor (in my experience, they just fail)
  • Uprated gasket set (not sure if thats in the main dealer service or not)
  • New VCU
  • Remove prop shaft
  • EGR blank - only because loads of threads about it. Too lazy to read what its actually for though...
  • Cruise control
  • Heated seats
  • Roof rack with lights and tool boxes
  • New pirellis all round and spare
  • Light pods on front bumper
  • Zenon headlight upgrade
  • I'd even get the elusive sunroof bag...
  • Replace the stereo with a flip-out touchscreen pc with wifi and gps
  • Finally, because I'm too tight to pay for petrol, a full LPG conversion.
 
100k miles and no object of money I would replace the whole drivetrain. Clutch, ird, vcu, diffs, half shafts, drive shafts. Along with wheel bearings, new tyres, all belts and tensioner and pulleys. Along with all the normal stuff, full service, all new silicon hoses blah blah blah. Or I would just buy a newer one :)

New vcu and remove prop? Would be waste of new vcu then!

As above but If I had no worried about money I would buy that one for complete rebuild into Dakar spec and buy another one for day to day use !

If it's petrol? You won't need the EGR mod, only turbo diesel engines have exhaust gas reserculation ;)

Yes, thats right. Any engine - as long as it was an option, ie no lambo engines...

Mine is a 1.8 k so my choices are based off that as its all I know. I dont read the td4, F2, etc threads as they not relevant to me 99% of the time.

learn something new every day! I was seriously considering getting one for mine but would have then been bitching about not being able to fit it!

You, Sir, have saved me however much an egr blank kit costs. More money to spend on guinness now!
 
If you want serious power, then forced induction is the way to go ;)
Either fit the engine from a turbo Rover 75, coupled to an L series Freelander gearbox. Or find a Turbo T series engine from a Rover 600/ 800, coupled to a custom gearbox adapter.
Or fit a KV6 and manual gearbox as above ;)
 
Why would you fit a new VCU then remove the prop? Thats like paying for your mrs to have her tits made bigger and making her wear a poncho
