What Tyre pressure

Ive got a 1996 300tdi with 275 70 16s

The steering is a little vague and im wondering what pressure I should have in the tyres, currently have 20 psi in the front and 30 rear, the local garage recommended these pressures but im wondering if 20 at the front is too low?
 
Purely on road at the moment, the garage told me lower pressures helps with vague steering, is that right? because ive been searching and read the opposite
 
That's total crap. Running lower pressure on high profile tyres will mean the sidewall will flex more and the air inside will have more space to move around. On road run higher than off road. 4x4 tyre pressures are alot down to personal preference. I'd go as high as 34 front 36 rear for on road use. But I only do it for a living....

That will be like a snake on the road..... To much side wall flet, also will build up heat and cause a tyre failure. Me 36-40 as front axle has more weight than back, unless you are carrying a load in back. Depends on tyre and on how it is wearing. center wear over inflated under inflated and edges wear first

Very true about the tread wearing differently dependant on pressures. Just check the max pressure the tyre is rated to. As many 4x4 tyres are only rated to 36psi, others upto 44. Always stay below this as this is the maximum pressure they will 'safely' take.

just a general rule........... air pressure will be on the tyre side wall with min and max psi. varies between the maker and load being hauled or towed
 
Don't normally see a minimum pressure printed on side wall. Normally just see MAX INFLATION / MAX PRESSURE 44psi, or whatever it recommends. I know remoulds such as INSA's are only rated to around 35psi and I don't think normal tyres are much higher.

To be totally honest im completly new to trying anything mechanical, Im going to through all the suggestions 1 buy 1 but may take me a while to work out exactly how to do each!

Ive bought a Haynes Manual and been watching as many youtube videos and reading as many how to guides as I can.
