I'm going to look at a few used Excursion Diesels... What should I
look for when examining these vehicles?

Dusted turbo's and cilinder walls due to lack of maintenance

I am not sure how clean your diesel is in the states and how big the engine
is in the vehicle you are looking at. Here in South Africa our diesel is not
too good (full of sulphur) so the small high performance diesels such as the
300Tdi in my Landrover need plenty of oil changes and tender driving to
extract good life.

The bigger lower revving diesels are a different story as they are more
tollerant of the bad fuel and because of the large capacities, can run
longer between oil changes.

I still think that regualar oil changes are a good idea for all diesels and
so a good serice history would be a must have for a second hand vehicle. You
should also speak to engineering shops that rebuild engines and find out
their opinions (speak to a few so you don't get biased by one persons rant).
I know that the Landrover engine I have does not have a great rep in South
Africa for long life so I had a recently rebuilt engine as a requirement.

I recently tracked down a nice 96 discovery that had just been rebuilt and I
am really happy. I get about 850km on the 90l tank before I decide to
refill. No idea what that is in Gallons per mile etc but it is a little
under 10l/100km which puts me in the small car league in terms of petrol
consumption except that I get to drive a 2000kg vehicle with excellent off
road abilities.

Hope some of this helps.

Stephen
