What to look for in a series 3 project

Hi all,

I am new to this site and I am looking for some advice.

I want to get a series 3 landy as a little project to play within the garage. I have limited knowledge but like a challange.

Could anybody help me and tell me what I should be looking for and what is a good price for a project. I would prefer one that runs and I can improve and existing working seies 3.

to be honest I'm fairly new to landrovers myself, but I reckon you could get quite a good start on a grand. I would expect tax and test for that, but would require a thing or two to makee it a good reliable runabout.

And then you'll have the joys of the improvements you could make, and once you get sucked into using the landy for what it was intended, modifying it to what you want it to be capable of!
 
i have very little experience but what little i have accrued has taught me that a running engine would be low down on the 'must have' list.a good chassis has to be the main priority with a fairly good bulkhead second and a good gearbox third.everything else is cheap and easily remedied,i was given my landy but i would say don't pay more than £300 for a project,tax and mot just aren't important unless you have to drive it on the road to get it to where it's going to be worked on.
 
I paid £900 for mine, and went to London to collect it from Hull, on a hired trailor at a cost of £60. I'm happy with what I paid for it. It was all fairly solid chassis/bulkhead wise. The engine ran, and gearbox seemed ok. It hadn't had any MOT for just over 5 years, but putting it through only required a good break overhall. I've spent a lot on it to get it where it is now, and I don't regret a minute or penny of it.
I have a new project now, so although I'm not actively seeking to sell it I'm open to offers. Feel free to ask me any questions.

It has 6 months MOT and tax left at the moment.


But to answer your question, I suppose it depends what you want to spend. Series 3's go for anything between £100, to £5000. What stage do u want it at, and how much do u want to do. What is it for ultimately?
 
For a grand you will get a series 3 with a long mot and it should be fairly sound. Ideal really as you'll be able to drive it for a good while and get a feel for what you want to do to it. At the bottom of the price range ie a few hundred quid for something that's been laid up for ages, you might find there's nothing worth saving! Having said that a series landy is always worth 200 quid down at the local scrapper:D
 
It also depends what project you want. Do you want a restoration project?

Or do you just want to have a vehicle you can improve on?

Or do you want to convert a normal landy into a trials landy?

Ideally one that works and can be used when I wanted to. I have another reliable car. Then I would like to do some work and a little tlc to it. I am limited in my mechanical knowledge but enjoy a challange.

I live in the country side so with global warming meaning bad snow, I may need it to get to work, thats if I am able to get it started.

I am thinking of about 500 upwards for the initial purchase and then buy things when either I want to change them or when they are needed.

How easy and is it to add a roof to a pick up style landy and is it possible and how much???

I hope this make things a little clearer, as i said I am not exactly 100% sure yet

That sounds like the same situation I was in when I bought mine, although I wanted a LWB, either a 109 or a 110.

Landrovers are like automotive meccano kits! You can plug and play with most of the series stuff, and most of the defender stuff will fit a series too.

As for how much, if you aren't in a rush, just keep your eyes open and it'll cost you very little! There was a guy on the forum giving away his top part of his landy as he had gone pickup!

Have a think about what fuel you want too. I fancied the V8 with an LPG conversion, which is what I got. Although now I have her I wouldn't change her, I do sometimes wish I had a diesel for there resistance to water.
 
did yours have a 6 year old chassis on it and a Turners recon engine ?

think you should tell us who's offered you what and get some details and pictures posted so we can all slag it orf and tell you it's only worth half the money - along with a few elpfull things
