FFS how do these garages come up with these prices i think the last set i did came in at about £140 incl parts and VAT you dont need to take the sub frame out if you got the right tools (which i have)

My wife said that when i sold her golf GTI and bought her a volvo 850R she got used to it and now won't drive a small car she's on her second mondy now.

Rip off coonts

Plain service? if you mean interim service oil/oil filter and pollen filter and a full check over there rip off cooonts anorl, we do that and a free service wash and free screen wash additive for around £90 but does depend on make model ect. Here's an example for you BMW 318 SPORT 2.0 all the above plus an MOT and 1 245/40X17 budget tyre all for....you sitting down £183 and a few pence. Parts/labour and VAT.

These rip off garages realy **** me orf coooonts all of them

I agree, it would be lovely to find a garage i can actually trust:rolleyes:

At least with the disco, most of the work is do-able at home so thats something worth thinking of.

The insurance & tax is ****-cheap on the KA so it would make sense to keep it and run it until it collapses in a pile of dust.

Garages that can be trusted are few and far between mate, my garage is in wickford and with all the other garages in that area there is only two i would personally trust with a car the rest i wouldnt trust with a wheel barrow rip off waaaaaaaa£$&rs all of em

Not sure how it passed last MOT with no bulb in it..

Lets just say, i dont trust it, mot'd for quick sale i think:eek:

I have since found both track rod end gaiters are fooked, i've got the new joints and will be fitting soon, i know these are a fail, there was no water in the washers at all, the ABS was out, as were a stop-lamp, all in all, i think it was a duff cert.

I am planning to get the track ends done soon, followed by the timing belt then the ABS followed by a mot pre-test check by a friend who is a tester.

How come you can't DIY service a 2005 Mondeo?

Basically because the ground clearance is zero so its ramp time and i hate working under ramps. Also engine bay looks like a chinese puzzle, full of pipes and wires:doh: I like the series 3, you could lift the boonet, climb in, shut the bonnet and work in the dry with one of them beauts.;)

There not a fail there a pass and advise

the other bits should be a fail tho'
Yes thats true unfortunatly the tester only has to say it was ok at time of test, a bulb can blow at any time and the washer may have worked at time of test the fact there was no water inthe bottle when the customer picked the car up is irrelavent realy as far as the MOT goes, the ABS light well same thing realy would be hard to prove it wasn't working at time of test.

my assumption was it was picked up like that after goin for test, but re-reading, doesent actually say.
at least it has a test and gives a bit of time to sort it out for the next.

OK Old skool. here is the deal. I have a 2002 V8 Disco. Apart from the engine oil all other fluids have probably been in since birth. Price me for the job. Change everything. Has 30k on the clock and no service history. Gonna limp home and see me old mum in the new year :stick one years ticket on it and you dont need to wash it. Needs to survive 2 years in North Africa before I come back again. Cash deal and it will pass MOT. I would like it back in a day, we boys get a bit freaky away from the smoke.

Yes it was a 'clean' pass, no advisory's etc, its one of those feelings you get when picking up a used motor, you know yourself that the cars basically a good-un from the test drive so they give a new mot to get it shifted, one year later there are masses of jobs need doing but its too far down the line to blame the other tester, they are safe, you are fooked:mad:

I have had the rear exhaust drop off one day after picking up a car with a 'new' ticket, there was NO way that happened in one day, the tester was likely told to ignore it for a drink to shift the car. I did report that station but never heard anything of it.

Car dealers have a bad image and in some cases its there own fault. I hate buying cars.

You can appeal an MoT pass, but there are time limits and the vehicle cannot be used or worked upon in the interim. I think the time limits are 30 days for most things, 90 days for corrosion issues. Buying a car with 12 months MoT from a trader would be the situation an MoT pass appeal would be more than likely used.

Hi all, looking for some advice, i know the answer will be a little biased so i'll take it under advisement;);)

We have three cars, the wife has a ford KA, i have a 2005 mondeo and the disco 1-1994 ES manual.

I am toying with the idea of getting rid of the mondeo and using the disco as a daily runner but its a hard decision, here are a few pros and cons...

Pro's.
Disco service yourself, mondy is garage only,
Disco service is about £100, mondy is £200-300
Disco insurance is £150 less,
Parts are cheaper but more are likely needed,
Will tow my trailer,
Is fun to drive,

Con's.
Disco does 30mpg, mondy does 55mpg,
Disco likes 55-65mph, mondy will eat tarmac at 80+ all day,
Mondy will not tow my trailer,
Mondy is like driving a 3-seater sofa, comfortable but boring,
Disco has ABS issues, oil leak at H/B drum, and needs timing belt doing,
Disco tax is £205, mondy tax is £186 ( i think)

I guess that both motors have about 5 years before the repairs get expensive/prohibitive. The disco has some minor rust on B+C pillar bottoms, the mondy is just showing some stonechip rusting. The disco is a very tidy car inside with grey leather in good nick and working aircon plus no leaks yet:rolleyes: Mondeo's have a tendency to eat rear subframe bushes which is an expensive repair-i sold the last one due to this fault:eek:

So i guess the question is, is a 16 year old disco a serious daily runner, the commute is 25 miles each way, we also camp so the holiday mileage can be quite high too. I do have the option of borrowing the KA if the landy is off the road (but i'd rather not:rolleyes:)

Answers on a postcard please...

Dave

Cant see a problem with running an old Disco as your everyday, I do. I'm a photographer and cover weddings etc all over the country and do it all in a "L" 3dr 200tdi. Most engine stuff can be done yourself, bits got cheap etc just keep a good eye on the bodywork. You can find out how to do most stuff on here and theres always someone that will advise you how to do jobs.

Other thing I love about my Disco is it trandsends all social boundries, if I turn up to a see a couple in a "not so nice area" I get the same responce as if I turn up to a toffs wedding in their statley home "Its a Land Rover" turn up in a 17year old car people judge you by it. Sad but true.

Afternoon spanish I will need some more details of vehicle reg no. if its on british plates chassis no. if not, can only give costs for sevice and mot obviously as wont know if its going to need anything else until i see it, as for serviving 2 years in africa only an idiot would garranty that mate. PM me with details and when are you likely to be coming over.

Tdci? A few mates av had **** loads of problems with the tdci's

Yes it is.

I water-locked it a year ago, some idiot designer put the air intake just above ground level at front:mad:, deepish road flood and that was it - bang, locked up solid. It took the ford stealers 4 weeks to get it going and its never been the same since, it smokes on startup now and never did before.

They fitted new egr, injectors, strip down, turbo off, the works but its still not right, have been reliably told it never will be.

I have heard about the DMF flywheel, it is beginning to drag on the clutch too as well as jumping out of 2nd gear going down hills which makes for some fun:doh:, apart from that its a lovely car which is why the decision is so difficult.

Dave

If you hydrolocked it then its probably bent a rod or two which is why it doesnt run very well as it will be down on compression :(

I would sell them both and get a newer Disco :)
