Power flush is a great idea in theory.....

BUT .....

How do you know which oil and miscellaneous sh*t has been through the machine before "they", "do", yours...... - and "if" they have cleaned it properly ..... <- probably a stupid question, they probably haven't !!

Th rather obvious answer means I agree that just changing the oil as you say is the safer option. Also, the "danger" of changing the full oil load, with the nice fresh detergent in, is that some crud will get loosened in the box, which could then jam the governor wide open , which is less than ideal  - much better IMHO, to change part of the oil with its attendant detergent quantity and hope it loosens the sh*t gradually, to be caught by the filter.....

many thks, two minds think alike then :)

looks like from draining the ATF oil i would get approx 6 x litres out, know there a few more litres left in the TC

i did only buy 2 x litres of ATF and 2x litres of transfer oil/ 2 x litres of diff oil which will allow me to ensure the ATF oil level is ok and got enough transfer and diff oil to change it completely , until the warmer weather comes when i can drain all the ATF oil out and replace it

as i haven’t personally checked the ATF level yet i thought at least then topping it up for now will be better than it being too low

plus the genuine ZF oil i think is around £28 per litre

also noticed a small weep i have on the inlet hose to the gearboxes intercooler so oil has obviously escaped

ordered some new stainless steel genuine jubilee clips as the old ones slip on the worm of the clip and allowing the hose not to be properly tightened

there was me only wanting to replace the front struts and all the little jobs i’ve now been noticing , but at least can get them all done ;)

Will I be ok with a cheap option from Britpart

IMHO, do NOT buy sh*tpart , sorry br*tpart :eek: filters - buy only a genuine ZF, either from land rover, or an alternative supplier like paddocks / island / etc. Your gearbox will thank you for it by not blowing up

Some br*tpart stuff is OK, but critical service items are questionable at best IMHO.

Couldn't agree more, specially for something as critical as a g/box

couldnt have put it better myself , what is the going rate for a new D2 gearbox these days ;)

Dunno but you can bet its more than a 100. good filters!

must admit i’ve only ever bought genuine filters for the engine , would also do the same for a gearbox

but in all fairness is good for any new owner to ask what type and not fall into the false sense of economy of being tempted to buy cheap filters on such a critical part

Yes you're right, always best to ask, done plenty of that myself on here

Thanks for the feedback. I found locally a cheap filter and it is coming my way (don't know the brand yet).
So plan B is to do now an oil change using the cheap filter and then do another oil change in 200-300kms and use the genuine filter the second time.

With respect, I wouldn't use a cheap filter in anything you care about - not worth it - it could let all the crud through, and knacker everything in short order. YMMV

For example, I had a filter delivery last week, including a Fram "Extra Guard" supposedly equivalent to a Hitachi OEM. I noticed on the box it is rated for 5000 miles o_O - and is claimed as 95% efficient down to 20 microns. IMHO, This is crap. I sent it back, and ordered a Mann "equivalent" which is 99% to 5 microns = much better.

I wouldn't have guessed that this would be so hard!

The cheap filter got lost in the post, so I am looking online once again.

Some people recommended jgs4x4 that offers the kit below from Bearmach for 10 pounds
https://www.jgs4x4.co.uk/land-rover-discovery-1-2-automatic-gearbox-filter-kit-tdi-td5-v8-rtc4653/

Looking for a genuine kit I found the below from Rimmerbros for a total of 94 pounds
https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-RTC4653
https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-RTC4276
https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-RTC4268
https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-RTC5818

That is 9.4x more expensive...so is the one from jgs4x4 that bad?

Yep! :) I did my filter about 18 months ago, and I think I paid about £47 +VAT for a genuine ZF - I'm pretty sure it came thru craddocks....I see it's now £49....

https://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/r...4653-gen-genuine-oil-screen-for-auto-box.html

OP:- you could try www.inlinefilters.co.uk OR www.filtermania.co.uk

inline filters are ZF agents.....

PS , thks for the ZF link will have a look for mine :D

here’s a pic of mine, but i use the mannol AG ATF oil

UPDATE

Today I found the time to replace the oil and filter (genuine parts). Drove around for 30 miles after the oil change.
Parked the car for a couple of hours (so it cooled down to ambient temp, around 10deg Celcium). Restarted the car and the issue is still there...

Starting from cold it behaves either like A or B (it's random which of the two)
A- It takes off in 2nd gear for the first 5 minutes of driving. After that it takes off in 1st and shifts are normal.
B- It takes off in 1st gear and refuses to shift for the first few minutes (I push up to 3500rpm). When it finally shifts everything goes back to normal.

What do I need to check next?
I checked with Autologic and there are no fault codes for the engine or gearbox

I am wondering, what is commanding the shift from 1st to 2nd? Why does is take off 2nd gear? What changes after it warms up a bit?

The oil that came out from the box looked in good condition (colour/smell) and it was last changed 30k km ago.
