What size are these bolts supposed to represent?

Me again, I'm trying to remove the swivel to axle bolts with everything else intact, just to slide the half shafts out enough to change the diff, but I have tried everything in my tool box and nothing fits, the closest I have is 5/8" or a 15mm hammered on, I can get a ring on one side but only an open end on the other, so when I give it some with 2 spanners interlocked the open ended one just twists off. Does anyone have any tips or know what size they're supposed to be so I can go buy something that fits? Wishing I hadn't bothered draining and undoing the diff nuts first,:doh: and it's ****ing down.:violin:
 
7/16" whitworth was the original bolt size ,5/8 is a fraction bigger,I used to grind them off and fit new ones(you will probably have to resort to the grinder for some of them anyway)

Whitworth invented the Micrometer which made mass production possible, without the means of accurately measuring things, the industrial revolution would never have happened. Before Whitworth every nut & bolt had to be made as a matched pair.

That is not true, each manufacturer had their own measuring system, at best, Whitworth improved on someone else's machine design, and luckily for him it took off. Some old bloke made some bolts, and those same bolts went on to cause annoyance and confusion in front of my house, then I destroyed them with my angle grinder, which I believe was invented by the angle gabriel, and was the catalyst for the destroyitall revolution, but I'm tired of rebelling now, you can have Whitworth, I've moved on.
