Hi guys, I need some wisdom from the bank of knowledge that lies with in this group.
I'm replacing my head gaskets and I need to strip and clean both heads. I've removed the springs and valves but noticed the valve stem seals are caked in carbon, I see in the gasket kit I got it have the valve stem top seals but imy so confused as to what the larger black rubber circular seals are for plus where do they go, also the smaller circular rubber sealsole go? Excuse my ignorance and lack of knowledge on this but I'm keen to learn and want to do it right plus I could not afford a garage to do it what with the way the work is going in these mad times we are living. So could some one please help?
I've read my manual can't find what I'm looking for so a guiding hand with any pics or links will be greatly appreciated
Keep safe guys and thanks for taking the time to read this
Dave

Valve stem seals slide on to the valve stem then drop on the spring and fit the cap, and its all held in place by the two collets. A workshop manual, Haynes or Land Rovers, will give u all the information u require.
Part number ERR1782 and eight are required as no doubt u have found out.

Your gasket kit is possibly a universal one, if so they give a selection of bits and which usually end up surplus.

The little blue circular rings go there and like Discool said the springs & collets on top. Piccy always paints a thousand words. Top one with the seals on, bottom one fully built with valves etc.

There is a special tool to remove / replace the seal. They are quite tight to remove and when putting the new ones back on you have to be careful NOT to squash them otherwise they'll leak again. This is the correct tool use, (see below video)

To be honest I took em off with a pair of pliers & tapped the new ones on using a small socket the same diameter, but I was just showing the correct way to do it. If you use pliers you have to be careful not to squeeze them too much otherwise they'll soon become out of shape and be useless.

doesnt matter when removing them, they shouldnt be going back on and a suitable socket is perfect for fitting valve seals

Thank you so much for the great tips. I did the pliers to remove and small socket to install :) worked a treat.so my heads are now done so fingers crossed for good weather tomorrow to start putting back together again.
Can someone one tell me where the other rubber rings go? Some are inch diameter and the others look like injector seals maybe
