Well I just wanted to update you on what was fitted and the end result,,

In anticipation of any improvements to what was seen on her when I looked 3 weeks ago,
we filled up with BP Ultimate, instead of Sainsburys or Tesco diesel..

So Today Items fitted;
New Cyclone Crank Case Breather with gaskets,
New Piper-cross Air filter,
New EGR Blanking kit,
New EGR/Turbo filter, the little orange one at the back..

Took off the inlet manifold and cleaned it with Mr Muscle,,
Not perfectly clean but much better,

Taken for a test drive to make sure all is well and I hadn't killed anything,
WOW!!! what a difference, when we purchased the Freelander is was sluggish and lazy,
now don't get me wrong she is no race car but its like it has had a new breadth of air and she likes it..

Now reaches 90 Mph comfortably on a stretch of road where I was pushing hard to get 78-80 Mph 4 weeks ago..

Very Very Happy..:D:D

Thanks to all that gave help and advise on what should be done,,
and what should be fitted..

Indi..

There was one little side note,,

I dropped a nut under the front end and it rolled back to about level with the back edge of the front wheels, so as I was a bit busy the wife decided she would like to have a look underneath..when we purchased the car on the last MOT there was a mention of an oil leak but we had not seen anything on the floor where the Freelander is parked everyday so hadn't worried about it,,one dropped nut found and also the point of our oil leak,,,

So I understand this is the filler nut on the IRD,,??
Should I just tighten it or get a new one,??
should I do a fluid change while I am at it??

I believe its 75w90 Fully synthetic gear oil, and 1.2 litres to fill..

Thanks in advance again..

Very unusual that it was loose, as that filler/level plug is infamous for being a sod to slacken off - often needing a long extension / breaker bar on the socket.

Check the threads haven't been damaged by some previous mechanic/gorilla.

Some folks have been known to drain the oil and then not been able to re-fill the IRD. :(

Sure - go ahead and change it - you'll also be able to check for metal 'bits' on the magnetic drain plug.

I used fully synthetic 75W90 too.

I would imagine this is a fairly inexpensive part from the stealer..
do they normally have any washers copper or brass, or is that the
drain plug?? I will get one of each and go from there...

I have heard of people welding on a second nut to make it easier
to undo for the next service, as its a bit difficult to get the socket
to sit flush,,

I also need to get some ramps to give a little more room underneath,,
not as slim as I once was...:(

from what i understand ..
it be better to use a 6 sided socket on that plug
( some tip i read somewhere about the ird plug )

see attached pic .. 6 sided be the black socket on right ..
( those sockets both be same size .. different 'faces' )

You may be surprised at the LR dealers price!!!!!

I think they either throw dice or think of a number and then double it - no logic ever seems to be involved.

Yes - a six sided socket has much less chance of rounding off the corners.

mine was just nipped up using a standard open ended spanner,
so hopefully will not be an issue undo..

I take it the leak will have had no detrimental effects,
as it must have been minimal amounts making its way passed the thread on the nut,,
just lucky to catch it when we did I guess..

I will get a set of 6 sided sockets as well,,
FREE Lander
Expensive Lander more like...

I would reckon everything will be OK if it was only a weep.

As for the expense - if you buy a few more tools I'm sure they will pay for themselves the first time you use them.

Look at the prices the dealers charge - for both parts and labour.

Even then one needs to hope and pray that they have actually done the work in the first place - as well as having done it correctly.

So if I take twice as long as the dealer's mechanic would - I am still content.

I can remember years ago making a calculation that proved to me it was more economic to take a half-days unpaid leave from work than to let a garage change the clutch on my Escort Mexico.

Oops - must stop - I feel a nostalgia attack coming on. :p

Good luck mate and enjoy the DIY.

Singvogel.

As the plug is loose, you could check/top up the level for the time being before doing a full change. I did buy a new filler plug for the IRD, which wasn't massively expensive. I'm glad I did as mine was well tight and even using a 6 sided impact socket I ended up mullering the plug! 3ft breaker bar needed too!

I'll dig out the invoice and post the part numbers and prices for the various bits…
