Check the thin wire that goes to the spade connector terminal for voltage when the key is turned to start pos. It could also be the ignition switch.

touch wood, think ive got it sussed!!
i put a big fat new earth from one of the bolts that hold the starter on to where the neg lead bolts on to gearbox.
also made a new wire from the connection block behind the fuel filter to the spade conector on the solenoid, so ive a red wire now instead of a red/white.
at the moment all seems good.
