Been working it out and think I'm getting 27ish mpg around town and about 34mpg motorway driving. Does that sound about right for a petrol

That would depend on which petrol?
My V6 averages 20 mpg for my daily commute which is mostly hilly Cornish B roads. On the motorway at a steady 70 it's closer to 26 mpg.
 
Sorry forgot to state. 1.8 petrol
Been pleasently surprised by its performance recently. Loads of power compared to my golf 1.4

27 mpg isn't to bad really. The 1.8 Freelander weighs something like 1500 Kg's. To put that into perspective my modified 72 Hillman Avenger 1500GT with its twin 40 DCOE carbs does under 20mpg, but weighs only 850Kg's. That's the same mpg as my V6 Freelander but the Avenger is half the weight!!
 
Got a 2001 TD4 manual - was getting 30 to 32 ish before fitting Renault 'stat in top hose (original 'stat failed open) . last tankful gave 37.17 mpg, and that was including 2 mile runs to work (so not getting up to full temp), and also a fast run to Conway from Stoke ( and back again later, of course !!) , cruising at the legal limits.
 
I have a 2006 td4 commercial and I get 36 round town and 46mpg on the motorway if I keep it to 60mph I have removed the egr and the propshaft as I do a lot of motorway with work (about 600 miles a week) I only put the prop back on in winter or when its green laning time :) Thinking about a remap or ronbox to get a little more mpg out of it anyone had it done and noticed better mpg? I fill up before a long journey then fill up again when finished so I know how many litres used then go on www.mpg-calculator.co.uk so its pretty precise .

My TD4 Auto did 33 mpg driving up to Scotland, only doing 429 miles before having to fill up. It was reasonably well laden and had 2 bikes on the back. Averaging 65-70mph up the motorway.
Now it is unladen, it is doing better, and the last tankful did 36mpg.

It has been remapped. Best test will be when I get home and do my normal journeys. The weather driving up to Skye and around Skye has been, well, wet and windy :D which is not conducive to great economy.
 
In winter my Td4 drops to 320 miles for £60.00 of fuel and does not seem to change what ever the course.

Whats that in real money?

2004 - TD4. Usually get 41mpg on my commute to work. Lots of A/B roads, junctions and a few hills (one of which is pretty big).

500 miles per tank is the norm. I have blanked the EGR, cleaned the inlet manifold out, run a RONBOX and use Diesel Rhino fuel additive.
 
Having had my Freelander lifted, that will have a detrimental effect on the fuel consumption.

And fitting bigger wheels, lifting it even more will make it worse as well.
