What lurks behind the lower dash ?

Last night when I was knocking out the old rotten drivers footwell, a load of mud/Muck started to fall from the bottom of the dash, this was followed by bits of rusted metal

, I'm guessing that this is not normal.

So what can I expect to find if I take the dash out

Sounds horribly like your bulkhead might be rotten. What does it look like from the engine-bay side?

Rust Rust more rust, holes mud leaves

You have to get to it first that involes a lot of swearing and a big crowbar

I tried to take mine off the other day to fix the heater (Ok, don't laugh) and it rapidly started to disintegrate. I did get a couple of rusty unused shotgun shells drop out though.

After that i thought better of it and it was hastily screwed back into place. The heater doesn't really seem that bad after all.....

The bottom of the footwells was rotten and I have replaced those with new ones. The rest of the bulkhead engine side appears solid. The rubbish including several large U shaped nails was initially falling out of the drivers heater vent that points down over.
So I suppose I will have to take the dash out and have a look. and hope its not too bad.

there isnt that much behine the lower dash, a small amount of wiring running to the wiper motor and center pannel if you have one. then there the vent control wire and that should be it.

you need to take out all the screws and then the two bolt which are hidden by the plastic tray in the dash, then it should come off very easily.

usually, the dash its self rots due to moisture and heat from the heater. just replace it with another from a scrapper.

I will take tendash apart this weekend and perhaps just fabricate new bits rather then hunt around in a scrap yard as Series LR's seem to be hard to find in North East Scrap yards.
Also I might find after taking a scrap one apart that it is in no better condition.
