get a td4 I recon the best way with a auto box for me every time except I do wish I had my Granada 2.9 engine in it some times except when I pull into a fuel station

Cheapest Freelander to run should be the TD4. However a V6 fitted with LPG would be as cheap to run. The V6 has the performance edge and will be much cheaper to buy. The V6 comes as an auto only, but choose the rite model and you'll have lots of toys.
Most LPG Freelanders have the LPG tank fitted where the rear exhaust box is. This entails removing most of the rear cubby box and fitting a smaller rear silencer.
The rear cubby box often fills with water anyway so is of limited use and fitting a quality absorption silencer ups the power slightly.
Some do, some don't.
I've had 3, 1.8 Freelanders, non suffered HGF.
My V6 has had a replacement engine from an MG ZS180 because of an overheat caused by a leaking thermostat. It's been fine ever since.
The 1.8 is cheaper to fix

Ive had my 1.8 for nearly two years now with no HG issues.
I recently fitted a prt thermostat and coolant hoses from a newer car to help keep it that way - 1.8's demand very regular coolant and oil checks but this I find part of the fun - its your decision ...take your pick

- its your decision ...take your pick What do you mean by 'deep pockets' ? To buy 1.8 petrol is that what you mean ?

After my L series I'd be very wary about buying a turbo diesel with an auto box!
They run far too well on pure oil when the turbo seals go, then the only way to stop them is by stalling.
Tricky to do with an auto box.

Can confirm. My Freebie is a 1.8 K, was fitted with LPG over 100,000 miles ago and with the exception of me not having the correct adapter for France, it has performed brilliantly and never given me any problems. I've never heard of the valve problem, but mine was fitted with a vacuum hose to squirt valve saver fluid into the injectors and the bottle has always been kept topped up.
