In an attempt to learn more about my 2.5 DHSE, I was having a route around the engine bay. I have a minor starting issue, it seams that there is some air in the transparent fuel line. When the ignition is turned on the bubble journeys up the pipe towards the engine block and disappears. Could this be a reason for the lazy starting? Also, could someone tell me what this inline filter is for? (see pic) is it to bleed the lines? Many thanks again.

Any thoughts on the lazy starting? It's quite erratic. Sometimes in fine from cold and others it's takes a while. From warm it's fine if left for 10 mins but after an hour it's very 'churney' many thanks.

Think you need to look at lift pump function and the glow plugs. Item is vacuum valve filter. Air is sucked in through it from atmosphere when EGR is active. When EGR is active ECU modulates vacuum valve to open and close EGR valve as required. Subject to airflow readings from MAF sensor. The amount of reduced airflow as measured by the MAF sensor equals the amount of exhaust gas being ingested. ECU uses this info to modulate vacuum valve to control air /exhaust gas mix to reduce Nox production.

Check the engine ecu. The sticker should say MSB & not AMR.

A lot of people swap the ecu's over & program the earlier AMR ecu, but on the later deisel engines they needed the MSB.

These ecu's under perform as they don't take into account the Maf Sensor.

Many thanks again I will have a look. Would that be a msb not a err, can't seem to find a picture of a amr on google for a p38.

What is the VIN number of your car? Also auto or manual. If you don't want to put it on here, PM me with it and i will tell you which ECU should be fitted to your car.

Engine:
21899637

Engine number doesn't compute in Microcat. Is there a chassis number on the V5? Is it manual or automatic? Ok forget that coming back as 2.5 BMW diesel Automatic 2001 Model. Chassis number should be WA452880. Looking like should be MSB106370.
