Hi there,
Have got a 2005 TD4 face lift Freelander 1 on which I have recently cleaned out the EGR valve on the front left of the engine among a few other jobs due to poor running. Now running well but sometimes just after switching engine off a load of diesel looking smoke is being vented from a pipe in the front left valance area, could you please enlighten me?

Ahh thanks for that, so its a seasonal thing. Does it also make a kind of low pitched whining noise for a few seconds when the engine first starts?
Thanks again.

yes it makes a noise and it will carry on for a while after you have switched the engine off on my old one I got fed up with it using diesel as it kept going and going so I pull the plug on it

Thanks for the heads up, is there anywhere I can find out more about this system and also what is its technical name?
thanks again.

It a Webasto Fuel Burning Heater or FBH on most forums. They are basically a small oil fired boiler for the car. The idea is to help speed up the engine warm up time. In really cold weather, the FBH will run to maintain engine temperature. This is because modern diesel engines are very thermally efficient. So efficient that there isn't enough spare heat to warm the cabin. This is why some manufacturers fit a FBH as a supplementary heat source.
These heaters can be fitted with timers and remote activation to warm the engine before starting a journey. This gives you instant heat from the heater.

Later cars were fitted with an electric heater called a PTC heater. Don't remember what it stands for without looking at my owners manual.
