Ok so what is this ?
Found on a Weber IHC34 carb connected to 2.25.
Is it some sort of emissions thing and how does it work?

its a flame trap.. to stop misfires going down into the sump and causing a big bang and if the little hole in the top plate gets blocked yer injun just wint run right
 
i think its an early kind of EGR valve type thingy. had them on lots of mod landies where the crankcase fumes where fed into the manifold. only problems i seen with them the little hole getting blocked.
when the engines where rebuilt they stuck tape over the hole to stop it getting clogged with paint and sometimes folk dint remove it before fitting engine or maybe the drivers decided to paint engine and just painted over the hole. either way you could spend days trying to get it to run correctly if yer dint know to check it.

i suppose with a lot of use it might get clogged up with gunge from the crankcase but i nevver seen one that was.



anyway if you have a sump breather connect to the inlet i'd leave in on other wise just bin it
 
reet having consulted the big book of landies, it bin named a ' crankcase emission valve' who's purpose in life is to act as a valve between the crankcase and the manifold.


with injun running fumes are drawn into the inlet and burnt whilst clean air is drawn into the crankcase via the breather to assist in purging the crankcase.

your susposed to clean it every 12,000 miles and at the same time check the diaphargm fer wear and tear.

so i suppose yer could fit one to a doosul, i'd need to do more digging to find out as doosuls int me bag
 
reet ave had a look through me big book of doosuls and there is no mention of one. in the picture i can see a hose from oil filler cap running to the rear of the inlet manifold and what may or maynot be something tucked inbetween the manifold and the block.
it impossible to say what it is as you can only see a clip on the hose and not what it is connected to. as i can't think what else it could be i'd have a guess at one of them crank emission valves.
 
Slob's right, but I'm surprised the question was asked, I thought all Ser IIIs had them, not to mention Minis, Morris Minors Sprigets, in fact many 70s cars. I'm not sure how they work, they have a rubber diaphragm in them, I believe if that gets punctured you can suck all the oil out of the engine. To complicate things, last time I checked (about 5 years ago) the diaphragm's is no longer available!
 
Ahh always wondered what that bit was, Ive got one in a box of bits that came with the LR wondered if it needed fitting or not.

Will post a photo later, Ive got a Zenith carb, my engine runs brilliantly, (was rebuilt by the previous owner, valves reground etc) the carb is all connected up, but there is one inlet (for somekinda pipe) thats been taped of and is not connected to anything.

Im guessing this could be where my crankcase breather should go? Then that part thats mentioned in this thread should go somewhere along the pipe from crankcase to that taped of carb pipe?
 
Hmm, having read the above posts doesnt seem like this bit connects in the place that the pipe is blanked of on mine.

Will post a photo later, dont want to not have a breather thats meant to be there!

Strange that :D

Just a bit of background.
The carb was removed of a engine that had been in a series 3 (See Help fred). This engine had been removed from the s3 and left sitting out side in a yard for a few years. Where i took it off one dark night as we were dragging the series 3 out.
So caus it were taken off by torch light i couldn't rightly say where all the pipes went but there was one the disappeared down towards the sump.

Just been out to the car and had another look, on second thoughts, seems that this probably is the crankcase breather. (photos below) Obviously it should be connected to something, where should it connect too? what kidna tubing should I use?

it should go to the outlet in the side of yer oil filler cap, allmost any tubing thats big enuf will do

plenty of peeps have blocked it orf and taken the outlet from the oil filler cap down via tubing to just below the engine as it's not such a good idea introducing oilly air into the fuel system, which is what you do tend to get with if yer valves/seats arent spring chickens
